About Department of Linguistics
The fundamental goal of modern linguistics is to understand how natural languages are acquired or learned, understood, and used by speakers by discovering the nature of the uniquely human language faculty that underlies all these abilities. This pursuit lies at the heart of the research in which our faculty and students are engaged.
Our internationally-renowned Linguistics department stands at the center of work in Phonology (specifically, Optimality Theory), Syntax (specifically, Generative Grammar and the Minimalist Program), and Semantics and Pragmatics (specifically, formal theory and the interfaces). Our department also has a strong Experimental core investigating Language Acquisition, Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics, and Phonetics/Phonology. Many students and faculty are also actively engaged in fieldwork.
Our faculty members' interests represent the core areas of the field of Linguistics, including Syntax, Semantics, Pragmatics, Phonology, and Morphology. They also include theoretically-informed approaches to Computational Learning and Parsing, Language Acquisition, Language Typology, and the Philosophy and Psychology of Language. Our language specialties include Romance, Germanic, South Asian (esp. Hindi), Japanese, Niger-Congo (esp. Yoruba, Edo, Atlantic and Bantu subfamilies), Edo, Amerindian (esp. Mohawk), Hebrew, Haitian, Amazonian, Kalaallisut, and Polynesian.
We maintain close ties with the Rutgers Center for Cognitive Science (RuCCS). Our faculty and students also enjoy frequent and productive collaborations with members of other departments with research interests in language, including Philosophy, Psychology, Spanish & Portuguese, and the Center for African Studies.
Requirements
Please note: We no longer require the GRE test. GRE scores will not be taken into account in admissions for Fall 2021.
In order to be considered for admission, TOEFL/IELTS scores if English is not their native language, three letters of recommendation from people familiar with their work, a statement of purpose, two copies of official grade records and an application fee. See the Rutgers Graduate Admissions Home Page for details. They are also strongly encouraged to send a writing sample in support of their application. This could be a copy of a master’s thesis, a term paper, a research report or even a challenging assignment report. A writing sample in a field related to linguistics would be acceptable if it demonstrates an ability to pursue serious scholarly inquiry.
Procedures
The application may be filed electronically at: Rutgers Graduate Admissions Home Page. Application forms can be downloaded from the website or be mailed upon request from our department administrator. Supplementary material should also be sent to the Graduate School.
Deadlines
The deadline for application is January 1 for admission in the Fall semester of that year but we continue to accept applications until all seats are filled. Students are not admitted in the Spring semester. Note that the Presidential Fellowship described on the financial support page has the same deadline of January 1.
Financial Aid
The department is committed to the financial support of its graduate students, and offers of admission normally include 5 years of support, assuming that the student remains in good academic standing. Financial support comes in the form of fellowships, teaching assistantships and graduate assistantships. For more information see financial support.
