   利物浦大学(University of Liverpool),简称“利大”,始建于1881年,是一所位于英国利物浦市的公立研究型大学,是英国六所”红砖大学“之一,为罗素大学集团、N8大学联盟、欧洲大学协会、英联邦大学协会、NCUK、RENKEI以及CDIO成员。该大学在中国与西安交通大学合作建有西交利物浦大学,在新加坡亦设有校区。利物浦大学名列2021年泰晤士高等教育世界大学排名第163位,2022年QS世界大学排名第189位,2020年U.S. News世界大学排名第146位,2020年软科世界大学学术排名第101-150位。



About the Programme

    The School of Histories, Languages and Cultures draws together a unique set of research and teaching expertise found across five departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences:

•Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology

•History

•Irish Studies

•Modern Languages and Cultures

•Politics

    Research in the School is rich and diverse, ranging from those studying the rhetoric of Donald Trump all the way to those who write about the design of ancient Roman drainage systems. The quality of this research was confirmed by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which rated over two-thirds of the research produced by our staff as world leading or internationally excellent. Our position in the School of Histories, Languages and Cultures and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers excellent opportunities for multidisciplinary and collaborative research projects. If you wish to study between two disciplines, we are often able to provide supervisors in both of your areas of research.

    We invite applications to join our team of over 180 postgraduate research students from candidates who have, or expect to graduate with, a good Masters level qualifications to undertake doctoral studies at the University.


We particularly welcome applications in:

• Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology: areas of research expertise include Archaeology of Human Origins, Early Village Societies, Egyptology Research Group, Mediterranean Archaeology, Ancient Economies, Receptions, Ancient Religions and Literary Culture of the Roman Empire.

• History: areas of research expertise include Cultural and Social History, Transnational History, Reading, Texts and Archives, History of Science/Medical Humanities.

• Irish Studies: areas of research expertise include Northern Ireland/Ulster, Political Inclusion and Exclusion in Ireland, Religion and Identity in Ireland and its Diaspora and History of the Irish Literary Revival.

• Modern Languages and Cultures: areas of research expertise include Critical Theory and Gender Studies, Colonial and post-colonial Studies, Film (European, Latin American and Brazilian), History of the Book, Latin American, Caribbean and American Studies, Linguistics, Literature (Medieval to 21st Century), Travel Writing, Slavery and Post-Slavery Studies, Social and Cultural History, Sociology, Anthropology and Contemporary Politics.

• Politics: areas of research expertise include British and Northern Irish Politics, International policy transfer, Changing norms in warfare, Immigration, Nationalism and ethnic conflict, Democratisation in Eastern and Central Europe, Southern Europe and North Africa and Latin America and American and British Public and Social Policy.

    

    Our postgraduate researchers are an integral part of our thriving academic community and Doctoral College and benefit from our strong campus based resources, including our library collections and archives, a dedicated Garstang Museum and several research laboratories. Further enhancing our students experience are our strong links with universities and research institutes across Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. At present we encourage our research students to participate in local, national and international conferences, seminars and other research activities.

    In addition, the School engages and collaborates with cultural institutions locally such as, Tate Liverpool, FACT, International Slavery Museum, National Museums Liverpool, nationally including British Library, V&A Museum, BBC and internationally including Gilder Lehrman Centre, USA, Irish Community Care, Ireland, Musée du Quai Branly, Paris, Mémorial de l'abolition de l'esclavage, Nantes. To help students take advantage of these thriving opportunities it has set-up a funding process designed to help cover the costs for all PGR students interested in participating in these types of activities.

    As part of our PGR program, the School (with the faculty and Liverpool Doctoral College) offers practical training for an academic career through our Postgraduate Research (PGR) Development Programme.


This programme includes modules and training in:

• Academic writing

• Conference preparation

• Networking

• Career development

• Workshops on creating and printing posters

• Training events.

    

    We also operate LiNK, a programme that “links” postgraduate students from across ten departments with cultural and creative industry partners to engage in collaborative partnerships sponsored by the University of Liverpool. LiNK offers tailor-made short-term placement, training and networking opportunities for PhD students to gain real-life and career enhancing skills as part of their doctoral programme.

    Our research receives major funding support from prestigious bodies such as; the European Union, Economic and Social Research Council, The British Academy, Arts and Humanities Research Council, The Leverhulme Trust, English Heritage, National Geographic.
