Although many people think that there are huge differences in what men and women say and in how theycommunicate, research has actually shown that there are very few gender differences in their way of communication. Ithas also been shown that both men and women can beaggressive or loving, patient or impatient in their communication. The real difference between the genders is that theyhear different thingswhenthe other is talking. Women are more likely to be sensitive tohidden messages or read between the lines about social implicationswhile men are more likely to read between the lines about status implications. For example, when a man tells his wife that he is tired but stillhasn’t finished all his work, his wife’s reply of “I know, it just sometimesseems like there aren’t enough hours in the day” would be interpreted by theman as criticizing him for getting too little donealthough his wife intends to sympathizeand empathizeabout all the work he has to do.
Today I’m going to talk to you about gender differences in communication. Now research has shown that there are actually very few differences in the waymen and women talk. In the public consciousness there’s this idea that thereare huge differences between what men say and what women say and how mencommunicate and how women communicate. And it’s actually been shown that bothmen and women can be aggressive or loving, patient or impatient in theircommunication.
What the real difference is between the genders is what they hear when theother is talking. Women are much more likely to be sensitive to hidden messagesor read between the lines about social implications. Men are much more likelyto read between the lines about status implications. And this comes from theirdifferences in society. So if you have this difficult conversation at home, where the woman says or where the man says, “Wow, I’m so tired, I don’t knowhow I’m going to get all my work done” and the woman says, “Oh, I know, it justsometimes seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day.” And the man says, “Thereyou go again, criticizing how much I get done”. In this situation the woman wassensitive to the social implications to what the man said and she was trying tocommunicate a message about how she sympathizes and empathizes about all thework that he has to do whereas what the man heard was a confirmation of you’renot getting enough done. So it is in this situation that it’s important toremember that we might hear different things or we might be more sensitive todifferent messages and what the other person says.
