A distressing video emerged showing a burning rat desperately ran for its life after being set on fire by two men in China.

The rodent was locked in a cage before a man poured flammable liquid over the cage and set it on fire.

The two abusers laughed when they saw a burning rat bolted out from the cage and ran around the yard before another man attempted to kill it with a bat.

Footage, uploaded on Weibo, a Chinese equivalent of Twitter, on March 12 which the account user mentioned 'someone had done it before and got his house burnt'.

The video, suggested to be taken at a Chinese city, showed a man setting a rat trap cage on fire.

Soon as he opens the cage with his foot, a flaming rodent dashed out like a fire ball and runs towards the bush.

The duo can be heard laughing as they watch the rat being engulfed in flames.

As the rat ran further and further away, another man held up a wooden bat and ready to kill it.

Jason Baker, PETA Asia vice president said that the suffering was hard to watch.

'Rats, like all animals, feel pain and pleasure, and they suffer when they are abused.  Cruel acts like this are the reason why PETA works to inform people about the sensitivity and feelings of all beings.'

The video has drawn over 20,000 views since it uploaded yesterday. Web users commented and slammed for the men's cruel behaviour.

'Every animal has a soul! This is too cruel' said 'Xmhjlz7'.

'Why does it have to burn it alive? It's not necessary to do it to a rat,' asked another user 'shayuyu'.

However, some of them agreed that vermin should be killed.

'This is outrage?! Rats are vermin and they should not exist on Earth anyway,' said 'wangcongqi'.

Last November, a man in Guangdong Province had his house burnt while attempting to set a few rats at the balcony.

He lit the plastic bottles by mistakes and set his house on fire.
