Teacher gives lesson in China's loneliest school to ONE pupil

A dedicated teacher has touched the hearts of millions after giving lessons at a micro-school in rural China despite having only one student in class.
Xu Zefeng, is the last teacher in central China's Youcheng Primary School, where he gives lesson to his only student, 11-year-old Xu Jiaqi.
Mr Xu believes it is a teacher's responsibility 'to carry on teaching as long as there is just one student'.

He is teaching Jiaqi how to solve simple equations and guiding him to do it step by step
Mr Xu started teaching in Youcheng Primary School in 1982. He had witnessed some glorious times in the 90s where there were over 100 students and nine teachers in the school that is hidden deep in Taihang Mountain.
As urban renewal plans escalated and new schools built in the town centre down the hill, parents from the village started sending their children to the town to receive better education.
Most of them left but the 11-year-old Jiaqi chose to stay.

According to Mr Xu, there were over 100 students and nine teachers at the school in the 90s

Jiaqi is brought up by his grandfather and the pair earn money from scavenging.
He told Henan Business Daily that he did not want to leave his grandfather and Mr Xu in the village. He worried no one to take care of them.
Youcheng Primary School, since then, has become China's lonelinest school where Mr Xu gives lessons to Jiaqi in the empty classroom.
The 54-year-old teaches Jiaqi eight subjects including languages, mathematics, music and physical education.
Though it seems to be a lonely place for Mr Xu, he spends most of his time with Jiaqi in the empty school where they have lessons in a classroom and have recess in the playground.

The pair earn money from scavenging but is now living in the town with aid of public donations
Last May, Mr Xu suggested the 11-year-old Jiaqi to leave Youcheng Primary School and find a better school in the town.
Jiaqi's grandfather agreed to look for a new school for Jiaqi. However, he worried that he would not be able to afford the school fee.
Since the incident being reported, Jiaqi and his grandfather received donations from the public and they are able to move to town centre and send Jiaqi to continue his study.
Mr Xu, however, is forced to leave Youcheng Primary School as the school shut down.
'I am too old, I don't think there will have any schools to hire me. I might go home and be a farmer,' he said.
