Several airlines that sets a standard for them to share misbehaving passengers’ information. The goal is to put restrictions on- or ban- unruly passengers.

The number of people flying in China has been on the steady increase. In 2014 the number topped 100 million for the first time. With the increase in the number of passengers there will also be a correlating increase in the number of unsavory ones as well.

The five airlines that agreed to create a blacklist cite not only hefty delays and financial losses, but also a desire to combat negative views towards Chinese citizens abroad.

The Struggle is Real

The lack of aviation courtesy by Chinese citizens has been highlighted by a . Like a Chinese passenger opening an emergency exit and deploying the inflatable slides after landing in Sanya on Hainan Island- hoping to slide past the grueling disembarking process. This act reportedly cost the airline 105,000 CNY and a two hour delay. Passengers on several other flights also did the same when they wanted fresh air and, of course, a cigarette.

In July of 2015 another man shut down a Taizhou airport after setting fire to newspapers and curtains in the first class cabin.

Several quarrels also made headlines in the past year, including one on an AirAsia flight from. A Chinese couple got in a dispute when they were not seated together. After a heated exchange the stewardess did eventually get them seats next to each other. When the plane reached cruising altitude and dinner was served, the woman involved in the arguement asked for boiling water for her cup of noodles. Still heated over the inconvenience of possibly being separated from her lover for a few hours she then threw the noodles and scalding water onto the flight attendant. This not only prompted the plane to turn around but the airline also fined the couple 50,000 Thai Baht (9,250 CNY).

Other mid-air fights included one over a crying child and several over reclining seats

Oh Do Behave

The new coalition  will put passengers who received administrative or criminal penalties on a new list that will then be shared between Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Hainan Airlines, and Spring Airlines. Although restrictions haven’t been outlined yet it is a show of force displaying the airlines’ disdain for travelers who disrupt the flow of air travel- and ultimately cost the airlines money.

Offenses that could land you on the naughty list include "acting anti-socially on public transport, damaging private or public property, disrespecting local customs, sabotaging historical exhibits or engaging in gambling or pornographic activities,” according to China National Tourism Association. Records will be kept by provincial and national organizations for up to two years.

Although the blacklist is aimed at Chinese citizens I’m sure that China would have no problem putting a few foreigners on the list. Best behave yourselves and hold on to your cup o’ noodles.
