At around 4am yesterday morning, a 27-year-old woman was caught attempting to smuggle a sizable stash of crystal meth across the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border at Lok Ma Chau.

The kilogram of meth, estimated to be worth HKD430,000, was divided into two bags and hidden inside her underwear, SCMP reported.

According to 'government sources,' customs officers are currently investigating to find out whether the woman was part of a larger cross-border trafficking ring. It's possible the drugs were intended for retail in Hong Kong, where "there may have been a shortage of illegal drugs in the underground market" after the recent winter holidays.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Hong Kong customs officers were still holding the woman for questioning. No charges have been brought against her yet.

In a separate case in Sha Tin, Hong Kong, police also arrested a man possessing 375 grams of what's suspected to be cocaine at around 1am yesterday morning. A stash of that size is estimated to be worth HKD450,000.

Both suspects face hefty punishments: in Hong Kong, trafficking drugs can get you a life imprisonment sentence and fines of up to HKD5 million. That's still better than mainland China, however, where drug crimes can result in a death sentence for dealers and traffickers.
