Across the Pacific Ocean, the massive protests triggered by the George Floyd police brutality case have been going on for weeks. In China, our public opinion is filled with hisses and ridicule about the desperation and chaos in the US. In stark contrast to the intense media coverage of violence and unrest, there is very little daily reflection and dialogue here about racism and social injustice. In the face of racial politics and anti-racism demonstrations in the US, we often show an indifferent or condescending attitude - we are bystanders or arbitrary judges. Our starting point of this issue is the belief that all injustice is connected. To pursue social justice requires us to understand issues that may seem irrelevant to us, and to care about communities who seem far away from us but are suffering serious injustice.
How should we recognize systematic racism and violence against Black people? Why is white supremacy and racism so inveterately constructed in America? What are the historical and practical links between Asian and African groups in the fight against racism? How can we, from the Chinese-speaking world, engage and support other communities of color?

This novel is inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. It tells the story of 16-year old Starr Carter, a Black girl who attends a predominantly white school outside of her neighborhood. She is the only witness when a police officer shoots and kills her best friend, the second murder she has seen in her life. This book is centered on the deep emotional impact of racial violence on young people. It has also been made into a movie with the same name, which is available to stream for free across many platforms.
Angie Thomas is an American author from Jackson, Mississippi. She is a former teen rapper and she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from Belhaven University. The Hate U Give, her first novel, has won numerous awards and was adapted to be a film by Fox 2000 studio. She has since published a second novel, On the Come Up.

This book is written as a letter from the author to his adolescent son, in reaction to incidents of police killing Black men in recent years. By sharing his own life story and personal experiences with racism, Coates expresses the fear he feels for his Black boy growing up in America and the hope that his son can hold on to all his dreams.
Ta-Nehisi Coates is a distinguished writer in residence at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship. He is the author of several bestselling books including Between The World And Me, which won the National Book Award in 2015. He is also the current author of the Marvel comics The Black Panther and Captain America.

This book tells a real story of racism, ethics, and how Black Americans have been used for medical experimentation. Henrietta Lacks was a Black woman whose cancer cells were taken without her knowledge and developed into the first “immortal” cell line for medical research. Since Henrietta’s death in 1951, her cells have contributed to many medical advances and health companies have earned great profits by growing and selling them. Yet, her family remained poor for decades, not knowing her cells were being used and having no legal rights to their profits. This book was made into an HBO movie in 2017.
Rebecca Skloot is an award-winning science writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine; O, The Oprah Magazine, and many other publications. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Skloot’s first book, took more than a decade to research and write, and has remained on the bestseller list for more than seven years.

How To Be An Antiracist

Ibram X. Kendi is a professor of history and international relations, and one of America’s foremost historians and leading antiracist voices. He is the Founding Director of The Antiracist Research & Policy Center at American University in Washington, DC. In the upcoming year, he will be a fellow at Harvard and the Director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research.
