Use These Two Words to Localize Your Chinese!

Have you noticed that textbooks sometimes are very annoying? Because not every daily expression used by native speakers are included in the textbook. Not knowing these words won’t stop you from speaking, but could be a big issue when you want to improve your fluency of spoken Chinese. 

Today, let’s continue cleaning the "dead angle" of the textbook, to help you bridge the gap between the textbook and real-world language.

The expression that we're going to talk about today is "anyway". How to say "anyway", a frequent English spoken word, in Chinese?

In English, “anyway” can be used in various situations. In this post, we chose 2 of the most common meanings.

1️⃣不管怎么样 bùguǎn zěnmeyàng

You emphasize the truth with “不管怎么样(bùguǎn zěnmeyàng)”, without being influenced by other things, in this case, we can use “不管怎么样(bùguǎn zěnmeyàng)” to mean "anyway, regardless".

For example:

不管怎么样我们得接受它。我希望我们下次能做得更好。

Bùguǎn zěnmeyàng wǒmen děi jiēshòu tā。wǒ xīwàng wǒmen xiàcì néng zuò de gènghǎo。

Anyway we have to accept it. I hope we can do better next time.

我告诉你了，没事的，但不管怎么样这是我的错。

Wǒ gàosu nǐ le，méishì de，dàn bùguǎn zěnmeyàng zhè shì wǒ de cuò。

I told you, it’s all right, but it was my fault anyway.

我没有时间去，而且不管怎么样太贵了。

Wǒ méiyǒu shíjiān qù, érqiě bùguǎn zěnmeyàng tài guì le。

I don’t have time to go, and anyway it’s too expensive.

2️⃣ 反正 fǎnzhèng

Another word that can mean "anyway" in Chinese is "反正(fǎnzhèng)". Chinese people use "反正" to explain or support a previous statement.

For instance:

我当然不介意带你回家，我反正走那条路。

Wǒ dāngrán bú jièyì dài nǐ huíjiā，wǒ fǎnzhèng zǒu nà tiáo lù。

Of course I don’t mind taking you home. I’m going that way anyway.

我觉得这不是真的。我反正还没找到证据。 

Wǒ juéde zhè bú shì zhēn de。Wǒ fǎnzhèng hái méi zhǎodào zhèngjù。

I don't think that's true. I haven't found any evidence, anyway.
