How to Conquer the "把bǎ" Structure With One Rule?
Hi everyone, welcome to join Silk Mandarin today to learn Chinese sentence order with just one rule!
So, what's this one rule?
As you might know, different languages could have different word orders. Let's have a look at the sentences in the picture below.
Today, we're going to talk about the "把bǎ" structure. Most of our students feel odd when they first learn "把" as the structure "S+把+O+V+other elements" is different from the regular Chinese structure "S+V+O".
But don't worry! I bet this structure will make more sense to you from the perspective of Slow Motion Technique!
Let's see a common mistake of "把bǎ" structure made by students:
- 发这个文件到我的邮箱。(Fā zhège wénjiàn dào wǒ de yóuxiāng.)
You've just made a common mistake influenced by English! Because we speak English in this way:
- Send this document to my email.
So, how can we get rid of English thinking way when speaking Chinese?
How to switch to the Chinese mindset?
Follow our Slow Motion Technique!
Imagine the sentence we presented as if it were seen in a movie, playing in slow motion. In this way, you can clearly see each step:
The first step is "select the file"
The second step is "send it"
The third step is "it arrives at the email address"
You can understand the "把bǎ" literally as "select" or "grab".
When you combine these steps together, you have the perfect Chinese sentence:
- 把这个文件发到我的邮箱。(Bǎ zhège wénjiàn fā dào wǒ de yóuxiāng.)
Basically, with the Slow Motion Technique, the Chinese order is exactly the order in which the actions are taking place.
Do you still remember the other "把" sentence that we talked about before?
How to say "Please put the book on the table"?
Yes! Follow the Slow Motion Technique! You will get a perfect "把bǎ" sentence:
- 把那本书放在桌子上。(Bǎ nà běn shū fàng zài zhuōzi shàng.)👇
If you start to view what you want to say with this Slow Motion Technique, you will never get the Chinese order wrong!
