American Football Player Joins Philadelphia Orchestra For a Day

Jason Kelce plays American football for the Philadelphia Eagles. The team won the Super Bowl earlier this year.

He has become one the best-known players on the team - and not just because of his plays on the football field.

After the team won the Super Bowl, Kelce gave an emotional speech in front of a huge crowd of Philadelphians. He did so wearing colorful “Mummers” clothing. Mummers are costumed bands known for their New Year’s Day performances in Philadelphia.

Football and public speaking abilities aside, Kelce is also known for his saxophone skills.

And on Tuesday night, those skills were put to the test. He played his instrument with the world-famous Philadelphia Orchestra -- one of the so-called “Big Five” American orchestras.

Kelce and the orchestra played music that went along with a special video of the Eagles’ winning season. The performance raised money for the Eagles’ Autism Challenge. The effort aims to support research on autism, a developmental disorder.

Kelce has played the baritone saxophone since he was young. He told CBS Philly that, long before he was an Eagle and a Super Bowl champion, he took part in many activities during high school. Among them was his school’s jazz band. “Music was a big part of my life,” Kelce said.

He has joined other area orchestras for special performances in the past. In February, he played with Philadelphia’s Avalon String Band during a special Mummers parade to celebrate Mardi Gras.

His football team appears to support Kelce’s musical side. Ahead of the performance, the Eagles’ official Twitter page wrote, “ROSTER MOVE: Philadelphia Orchestra acquires baritone saxophonist Jason Kelce (for one day).”

A roster is an official list of the people on a team.

Of course, Kelce will not be moving anywhere. He is expected to bring all of his skills back to the Eagles as the team aims to defend their championship.

The team begins the 2018 season on September 6.

American tennis player Serena Williams is not pleased about getting more drug tests than her competitors.

Williams expressed her opinion Tuesday after receiving another unannounced visit to test for performance-improving substances.

Williams wrote on Twitter, ”And it’s that time of the day to get ‘randomly’ drug tested and only test Serena. Out of all the players it’s been proven I’m the one getting tested the most. Discrimination? I think so."

In another tweet, Williams wrote, ‘But I’m ready to do whatever it takes to have a clean sport so bring it on. I’m excited.’

It is not the first time this year that Williams has complained about being drug-tested more than other American players. Last month, she told reporters ahead of the Wimbledon tennis tournament, “Just test everyone equally.”

Williams made it to the Wimbledon final, where she lost to Germany’s Angelique Kerber.

A report in June by the news site Deadspin found that Williams had been drug tested five times in 2018. That is at least two times more than other American women in the sport.

A spokeswoman for Williams called the frequent drug testing “invasive” and “targeted” treatment. She told Deadspin “Serena Williams has never tested positive for any illegal substance despite being tested… four times more frequently than her peers.”

Williams returned to competition earlier this year after taking time off during her pregnancy. She gave birth to her daughter last September.

Following her Wimbledon loss, Williams said she had proven to herself that she could still compete to win Grand Slams. She has won 23 Grand Slams in over 20 years as a professional tennis player. One more Grand Slam title would tie Williams with Australia’s Margaret Court for the most ever.
