Hyundai Blue Prize 2017

Hyundai Blue Prize award-winning exhibition The Precariousness will be presented in Beijing’s 798 Art District Hyundai Motorstudio Beijing from March 23 to May 20, 2018. With this exhibition, Li Jia, an excellent Chinese curator has won the “Creativity” Award of the first Hyundai Blue Prize in 2017.

With “Social Mobility” as its theme, the exhibition focuses on the most specific political reality at the moment and people’s daily life. It examines and discusses all sorts of forces that shaped our life in current environment. It not only suggests Chinese contemporary art practitioners are highly sensitive to their times, but also coincides with Hyundai Motor Company’s deep thinking of society today and future developments as well.

In this exhibition, nine sets of works and social programs with fairly representative characteristics are chosen by the curator, which aims to show to the audience how the people with hope establish their connection with this land, look into the future and put into practice a common but fruitful life in this ever advancing era. Although changing and mobility are universal experience even the only choice for a modern human being. Over the past half century, capital logic of globalization and neo-liberalism has successfully condensed the entire world into a continuously folding and distorting domain. This unprecedented historical moment entails unprecedented conflicts, crises and difficulties; it seems that homogenization of capital and abstract forces are bringing our future to a single landscape and illusions exhausted all options.

With this regard, based on plural but concrete experience of life and circumstances, The Precariousness tries to show and understand our life with creation through these little stories and develop an alternative imagination and option for our common future. This argument echoes the mission of Hyundai Motorstudio’s “Together for a better life”. Based on this, The Precariousness will present a different social perspective to the audience.

Departed from Guangzhou & Beijing:

The Locality of Art

The conversation between curators Hou Haru and Cui Cancan attempts to discuss the locality of their curatorial practice. Hou Hanru curated a series of exhibitions such as the touring exhibitions “Cities on the Move”,“Canton Express” project,“Zizhiqu - Autonomous Regions”,“Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism \ Architecture”, which included his research on the art of Pearl River Delta. Cui Cancan curated “Between the 5th and 6th ring road in Beijing”, “Heiqiao Night Away”, “Hair Cut in the Middle of Nowhere”, “The Decameron” which were based on the social-political realities of Beijing. The idea of locality could be regarded as a controversial and complex issue in contemporary art. What’s the urgency and possibility of talking about this issue? How could the concept of locality be defined? Whether the definition itself function as a possibility to open up the discussion or a limitation. How could the global and the local constantly shape each other? What might be the future of the locality? These two curators departed from the territories they are familiar with, while the question might be, how would they extend or bypass their original imagination about the locality of art throughout their careers?
