No industry has been left unscathed as coronavirus swept through the UK. But the automotive industry in particular is facing extremely difficult times and it's not just because of the virus.
Strict lockdown measures forced all non-essential retailers to close, including car dealerships. As the virus spread, almost all factories in the UK pauses production both to protect their workers and in anticipation of a sales crash. Although the onset of the virus might be simply delaying new car purchases, many might not be able to afford a new vehicle once the restrictions are lifted and may instead look to make a purchase on the second-hand market.
This could be severely damaging to the car industry at any point in history, but it comes at a particularly awkward time as Brexit looms. Around 60 percent of most UK car components are imported, and Brexit may well disrupt this. We do not yet know the full details of any trade deals, so the damage has yet to be measured.
The industry is also facing another challenge, the undeniable shift to electric. As car makers respond to market and legislation changes, they have invested more than 300 billion euros globally in electrification. But margins on cars are slim and many electric cars are sold at a loss which means automakers could struggle to make back their money. The British automotive industry was headed for choppy waters with Brexit and electrification anyway. and this has only been worsened by coronavirus. To make the situation even more challenging, the government may only be able to offer limited help to keep firms afloat, as is already poured so much money into other sectors of the economy.
