Guangdong News Now

For the news you care about in Guangdong

April 27th marks World Intellectually Property Day. The ongoing Canton Fair, China’s largest foreign trade fair, has been strengthening protection of IP and patents in recent years. What progress is being made? GRT Radio talked to foreign buyers at the complex to find out.

Monty from India started trading with China 13 years ago. He said he can hardly find any fake products at the Canton Fair now, " I have been to all halls, all the places. I haven’t found any brands (or) any fake products. In the past, there were many. If you ask me now, it’s 100% clear. (They) don’t have any."

Fading Safadieh from Canada has been importing electronic products from the Canton Fair over the past 7 years. He is satisfied with the results of IP protection initiatives, "I guess it’s getting better. I noticed one or two fake brands here. But others are fine. I can see there have been a lot of improvements already."

Unluckily, Abdulla Al-Shaya from Kuwait has suffered from patent infringements once before. He took immediate action to solve the problem," I export goods from Europe and I faced this problem (in patent infringement). I have two products that were patented in the US and Europe. And a Chinese company copied my products. But I sued them via legal affairs (system) and things are going good. It was easy, took us  2 months and things are good now. (IP protection) gives me more confidence and gives Chinese products more confidence."

Another buyer from India said IP protection is a key issue. He hopes protection measures can be further strengthened,"as far as IP protection, it’s not up to the standard of other countries. But in comparison (with the past), it is still better. In terms of plastic items and consumable items, it’s ok. But In terms of electrical items, still a lot to improve."

In addition to IP protection, as the barometer of China’s foreign trade, there are a lot more topics to discuss around the Canton Fair. China Chats, one of the expat-based chat shows from GRT Radio, will invite buyers and exhibitors to share their opinions on our show at the Fair’s complex today (April 27). Stay tuned to GRT Radio for more.
