Typhoon Hato made landfall in the coastal areas of the Jinwan District of Zhuhai yesterday at 12:50 pm, and since then it has swept its way across Jiangmen, Yangjiang, Yunfu, and Maoming until it moved into the neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region last night.

Many parts of Guangdong have been hit hard by the massive typhoon, and multiple tide-gauge stations in the Pearl River Delta experienced their highest tide levels in history.

Ahead of and amid the typhoon making landfall, Hu Chunhua, Secretary of the Guangdong CPC Committee and Guangdong Governor, Ma Xingrui, instructed the province to make full efforts to minimize damage and loss caused by the typhoon.

As of last night, around 278,900 were evacuated. As conditions improve, rail services are coming back online with the Guangzhou-Kowloon Through Train, which was suspended due to the typhoon, resuming operations today (Aug 24).

According to the Guangdong Meteorological Office, on average 4.5 typhoons make landfall in the province each year. This year, 3 typhoons have so far made landfall in Guangdong with more expected later in the year.

International brands to join mooncake race

With Mid-Autumn Festival fast approaching, foreign brands are clamoring to get in on the action this year, with a slew of international brands set to release their own versions of the traditional mooncake this year.

Oreo is one brand exploring business opportunities related to the Chinese festival and is set to release a black-and-white mooncake. Oreo joins the likes of Starbucks who began selling coffee-flavored mooncakes back in 2010 and Haagen-Dazs who sells ice cream moon cakes.

The traditional snack usually includes sweet fillings such as red beans and jujube paste. Recent years have also seen many new and wacky flavors hit the market, including nonconventional savory flavors.
