Jaywalkers in the city of Shenzhen may need to think twice before crossing the street illegally with the upcoming implementation of an AI-powered CCTV system that can recognize your face and send a fine directly to your mobile phone after you have committed a jaywalking offence.

A company called Intellifusion has teamed up with local police to set up AI-powered boards at intersections. The system already displays your photo along with your family name on large screens if you are caught in the act, but the company is now looking to work with mobile carriers and instant messaging platforms like WeChat to notify jaywalkers of fines payable directly through mobile phones.

According to China Daily, Shenzhen police dealt with in excess of 200,000 jaywalking cases between 2016 and 2017, and the screens set up at intersections have already displayed the faces of 13,930 jaywalkers. Currently only 10 percent of the city’s population can be identified by the system, but this number is expected to increase once provincial governments merge databases.

Panyu in Guangzhou also implemented new rules recently that state that jaywalkers should be punished by being required to sit through a traffic safety information video. Those who have no time to watch the video must post to their moments an explanation of why they violated the rules and generate at least 20 likes

Ethiopian Airlines, the flag carrier of Ethiopia and wholly owned by the Ethiopian government, recently announced that three weekly flights will be added to the existing flight schedule between Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, and Guangzhou.

The increase in flights is due to Guangzhou’s position as China’s “southern gateway city” and being the starting point of the Silk Road. In recent years, the amount of passengers travelling between Guangzhou and Africa for trade purposes has also increased.

According to the Greater China General Manager of the airline, Mr. Yared Berta, Ethiopian Airlines is responding to the increased demand brought on by the implementation of the Belt and Road initiative as a bridge that connects the East to Africa.
