Super Typhoon Mangkhut kills 4, wreaks havoc across GD

At least four people were killed in Guangdong by Super Typhoon Mangkhut as of 8 am today (September 17) after the Typhoon made landfall in Taishan city at around 5 pm yesterday. Three deaths were caused by falling trees in Guangzhou and one died after being hit by a collapsed building in Dongguan.

According to the latest reports from the Guangdong Civil Affairs Department, more than 951,000 people in Guangdong’s 14 cities including Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Jiangmen, Zhanjiang and Yangjiang, were relocated to safety as a result of the typhoon. The total estimated damage caused by the typhoon is still unknown.

Governments at different levels have put aside 14.4 million yuan to be used for purchasing materials for disaster relief efforts. 70,000 pieces of clothing and quilts, 30,000 summer sleeping mats, 10,000 folding beds, as well as water and food have been distributed.

The typhoon was the strongest typhoon of the year, and only the 8th typhoon categorized as “strong” to hit the region in 70 years. Jiangmen, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Shanwei and Hong Kong experienced level 14 – 17 gusts, with winds of 62.8 meters/second recorded at the Tuoning Islands in Huizhou city.

The devastating typhoon entered into the neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous region last night and is likely to weaken into a tropical depression tomorrow morning. The emergency response alert in Guangdong has been lowered to level 3.

As of 7 pm yesterday, 200 people were reported as injured in Hong Kong and 15 in Macao. In Hong Kong, by 2 pm, a total of 111 people had sought medical treatment at public hospitals during the typhoon. There were 76 reported cases of fallen trees, according to the Hong Kong SAR government.

Schools closed, production resumed

Today, all schools in Guangdong including kindergartens and training classes organized by the government and private training centers are closed, while production, market, and business activities have resumed.

Military forces in Guangdong were sent to coastal cities and prepared about 1,000 lifeboats and disaster relief equipment for emergency rescues.

PRD suffers floods and damage

Smashed windows, uprooted trees, swaying buildings, collapsed external walls, and flooded lobbies in residential estates, along with rough waves crashing against breakwaters, were seen from images and videos posted on social media across cities in the Pearl River Delta.

Guangzhou was severely flooded last night as storm surges poured into the Pearl River. Areas close to the river, including Yanjiang Road, Binjiang Road, Shamian Island, Huacheng Avenue, and Huangpu Development Avenue were affected. Sun Yat-sen University and the White Swan Hotel were also flooded. Power was cut to parts of Guangzhou, and was still not back to normal as of noon today, after transformer substations in Haizhu and Huangpu districts were flooded.

Flights were canceled at airports in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, but have resumed as of 8 am this morning. Some flights may still be canceled or delayed due to lingering rainfall in the Pearl River Delta region and Shenzhen. Passengers are therefore advised to contact their airlines for the latest updates.

Railway operations are also gradually resuming, and as of 10 am, the Beijing-Guangzhou High-speed Railway, Hangzhou-Shenzhen Railway, Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway, Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway, Dongguan-Huizhou Intercity Railway and the Guangzhou-Kowloon Through Train have all resumed operations.

31 provincial highways have been forced to close due to floods and fallen trees, but most others have reopened to traffic.
