A total of 845,697 foreigners were registered as living in the Chinese mainland in 2020, with Guangdong recording the highest number of non-mainland residents. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the number represents an increase over the 593,832 foreign nationals registered in 2010.

The foreigners recorded are among around 1.43 million non-mainland residents reported in the recent census, which includes Hong Kong & Macao SAR residents, as well as those from China's Taiwan. The majority of these registered individuals were recorded as being in the Chinese mainland for employment purposes, followed by education and then business.

Guangdong is home to the largest number of non-mainland residents, recording a whopping 418,000 (including those from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan). Yunnan came in second, followed by Shanghai, Fujian, and Beijing.
