“Clearing the Bay” operation nabs 353 smugglers
The Guangdong Provincial Department of Public Security held a press briefing on October 11 to reveal that the police, the coastguard, and customs authorities had jointly carried out a “Clearing the Bay” operation from October 1 through 7, concentrating on criminal smuggling activities using speedboats.
Yang Bingsheng, deputy director of the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau, also explained at the briefing that on September 25, when Hong Kong police were inspecting ships suspected of smuggling in the waters of Shazhou, a law enforcement boat was hit by a speedboat, causing four police officers to fall into the water.
Among them, a Senior Inspector of the Hong Kong Marine Police, Lam Yuen-yee, was sadly killed.
On September 26, the Guangzhou Municipal Public Security Bureau filed a case for investigation after receiving a report from the Hong Kong police requesting a co-investigation.
After an in-depth investigation, a task force identified Deng Moubiao (male, 31) and Deng Mouqiao (male, 35) as two major suspects, along with several gang members. The suspects were apprehended on October 1 and 2, while the speedboat involved in the crash was also found. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Meanwhile, the broader operation cracked a total of 55 cases involving smuggling. Three hundred fifty-three criminals were arrested, while 860 illegal vessels were seized, along with various illegal imports, including engines, vehicles, frozen products, and oil.
