Coaching, Mentoring, Sponsorship: The Value for Women Recap

Rella Huang, China LNG Marketing Manager at ExxonMobil, kicked off the webinar with a warm welcome and a survey on the perception of values in Coaching, Mentoring, Sponsorship. It turned out that one in four participants did not know about Coaching, Mentor, Sponsorship, and nearly half of the participants only had a vague idea of the value in these programs.

Tze San Koh, President of Gas China Marketing at ExxonMobil, continued with diversity and inclusivity statistics in China and ExxonMobil. She unpacked the need for Coaching, Mentoring, Sponsorship programs for companies and the employees respectively. She also shared that in ExxonMobil China, women accounts for 25% in the higher executives, and 50% in workforce, higher than the global level. Moreover, there are more women engineers with graduate degrees in ExxonMobil China. Still, while ExxonMobil is taking substantial strides to obtain gender equity, the larger business community needs to recognize the gender gap in leadership.

To expand on the actual meaning of Coaching, Mentoring, Sponsorship, Poh-Yian Koh, VP of China Operations at FedEx Express, defined each term and elaborated on how each program can help women success at workplace. During her thirty years with FedEx, she benefited from coaches, mentors, and sponsorships with diversified background. And she encouraged women proactively find their mentors and sponsorships to achieve great success.

At FedEx, Marco Lee, VP of Sales China at FedEx Express, and Chrisitie Chen, Managing Director, Human Resources, China Region of FedEx Express, shared more about how FedEx tapped the resources of Coaching and Mentoring program to promote DEI practice. To promote gender equality and women career development at FedEx, the also launched Linc-UP and Ramp-UP mentoring program, enlisted over 60 senior leaderships and paired 168 mentors with mentees across Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa (AMEA) regions.

At ExxonMobil, Stella Hu, Chairman of ExxonMobil Chemical Services, introduced more about the difference between men and women in soliciting support from leadership. She shared, in her 15 years’ service at ExxonMobil, how she leveraged sponsorship within ExxonMobil to traverse the organization and prepare for roles central to the business. Quoting An Essay on Horse by Han Yu, Wenqing Sun, Asia Pacific Research and Operation Manager at ExxonMobil, also shared his take on the impact of sponsorship, and how women can better use of it.
埃克森美孚的胡华玲(北亚区聚乙烯销售总监)和孙文青(亚太区技术运营总监)向大家分享了他们对于伯乐项目的实践技巧。胡华玲分享了自己在埃克森美孚的伯乐经历,强调了女性与高层领导的互动比男性少,更需要伯乐改变职业发展的道路。孙文青则借用了唐代文学家韩愈的“千里马常有,而伯乐不常有”来强调公司鼓励伯乐知人善用,发展员工,同时也发展更多伯乐交替助力。
This webinar was highly interactive with not only multiple polls, but also breakout rooms where participants could further discuss different topics related to Coaching, Mentorship, and Sponsorship amongst themselves.
