A Forest Tower Connecting City and Nature
At AS+GG, we design contextually for each specific site, translating culture, resources, and site properties to inform our design decisions. Our recent winning competition entry for Nanjing Jiangbei New Financial Center Phase II plot 23-26, the Forest Tower, is a 250-meter office complex connected with the adjacent river front Park.
Well-known for the lush landscape and forest, Jiangbei’s green park system stretches from Laoshan National Forest Park, through the new Financial City master plan down to the riverfront. Anchoring the unique riverfront park funneling to the core of CBD, the plot 23-26 design brings the park to the building and sky, creating an urban forest and sustainable icon along the river. Representing the vitality and growth, the 250-meter tower reflects the spirit of the vigorous development in Jiangbei New Area.
Set on a key node of the axial boulevard, the tower’s simple but powerful massing defines the intersection. The twisting terrace starts from the park side and extends towards the city, forming an unexpected but elegant contrast from various street perspectives. The tower will become a public symbol that rises dynamically from the park.
Biophilic design is a key principle of the building philosophy. The facade design features a twisting green terrace system that extends the landscape from the tower base and organically spirals up and around the façade. A sustainable warm-texture wooden trellis protects the landscaped terraces, creating a highly desirable modern office amenity that helps improve the well-being of the people. Green spaces help to maintain a strong connection with nature while improving air quality, attenuating noise, and increasing solar protection.
The building is shaped to minimize solar exposure with the broad edge facing south and the narrower sides facing the east and west. To mitigate afternoon sun。The shade structures support the vertical greenery that wraps from the south towest facades, providing solar protection at the time and location it is most needed. Provided the vertical greenery is deciduous, in winter the sun will pass through the trellis providing warmth to the space behind. The building is further optimized by improving the glass daylight visibility to allow for more daylighting to reduce the need for artificial lighting. The facade system with additional vertical fins on the non-terrace surface, effectively reduce 14.58% of solar heat gain.
Creating a vibrant public space to connect to the park and building facilities is important to the design. The base of the building is carved with a large multi-level sunken plaza that is the key public node linking the adjacent park and parcels, and a seamless connection to the underground retail and metro intersections. A three-story retail space unfolds above the plaza with a roof garden and shading trellis to offer an unforgettable experience with a stunningview of the river.
As the core of the city’s expansion north of Yangtze River, Jiangbei has rich natural resources sharing the same cultural roots with Nanjing. Inspired by the city’s unique urban phenomenon of “Mountain, River, City, and Forest,” the design, with the proposals for two other plots for the competition submission, created landmarks that are integrated with the urban environment and surrounded by nature in harmony. “Our goal is to create a modern and sustainable design that speaks to the local culture and becomes the vision for the future.” says AS+GG Design Director, Fei XU, AIA, “ We think the building will be an important pivot to celebrate the connection of the city and nature.”
