Happy April Fool's Day~那些和fool有关的习语

4月1日在许多国家有过“愚人节”(April Fool's Day)的习俗,在这天人们会对别人开玩笑,或者上演一些恶作剧。恶作剧的受害者被称为“4月愚人”(April Fool)。


善意的小玩笑无伤大雅,但也一定要注意分寸哦。正如一句谚语所说:a fool may sometimes throw a stone into a well which a hundred wise men cannot pull out,“一个愚人所造成的损失,一百个聪明人也弥补不过来。”

1. a fool always rushes to the force

【谚】愚人总爱强出头

 

2. a fool and his money are soon parted

【谚】傻瓜口袋漏,有钱留不住:

Jimmy spends all his pennies for candies.  A fool and his money are soon parted.

吉米把所有的钱都买了糖果,真是傻瓜有钱留不住。

 

3. the fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool

【谚】愚者自以为智,而智者则知自身之愚

注:本语出自莎士比亚喜剧《皆大欢喜》第5幕第1场。

 

4. be a fool for one’s pains 

做徒劳无功的事;自寻烦恼:

If you propose to take him in and board him for that small sum, you will be a fool for your pains.

这么点钱你就打算收留他,让他搭伙,那你将是吃力不讨好的。

 

5. a fool may ask more questions in an hour than a wise man can answer in seven years

【谚】蠢人一小时内提出的问题,可使聪明人七年回答不完;聪明人也会被蠢人难倒。

注:常用于send on, go on和be on等之后。

黄粱美梦,自以为幸福(实际不存在的)处境:

His parents are in a fool’s paradise, if they believe he is working hard for his examinations. He goes out every night.

如果他的父母相信他正在刻苦准备考试,那他们是在 做黄粱美梦。他每天晚上都外出娱乐。

 

17. fools rush in where angels fear to tread

【谚】智者却步处,愚者独敢闯;傻子不知天高地厚

注:本语源出亚历山大•蒲伯(Alexander Pope, 1688 ~ 1744)的《批评论》 (An Essay on Criticism)。语中的“angels”一词意指“聪明人”或“经验较丰富的人”,有时可用特定的“人”或“人们”取代“angels”用作主语,如:

My brother very rarely gives an opinion on matters he knows little about — we cer­tainly didn't expect him to rush in where angels fear to tread.

我的兄弟对于他知之不多的事情总是很少发表意见 ——我们当然不能指望他冒失表态。

 

18. fools should not have chapping sticks

【谚】利器不可给蠢人;蠢人不能动刀弄斧

 

19. a fool’s tongue is long enough to cut his own throat

【谚】愚人吃亏在多言
