Is Your Child's Hearing Healthy?
Want to make sure your child's hearing is sound and healthy? Follow this checklist from the Beijing United Family Hospital (BJU) Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department to see if there's any cause for concern.
The following are signs of normal development for children that indicate that they have healthy hearing:
→ Newborn to 3 months
Can be startled by noise;
Can be woken up by noise;
Stops crying or feeding when spoken to.
→ 3-6 months
Turns head to look at someone who is speaking;
Pays attention to toys or objects that make noise;
Smiles and responds when spoken to.
→ 6-12 months
Turns head to look for the sound of a parent's voice;
Turns around if called to from behind;
Makes noises in response to being spoken to.
→ 12-18 months
Can understand basic phrases like "no" and "bye-bye";
Turns to face a person or object when hearing its name;
Can say simple things like "mama" and "dada".
