Intl. Theater Live Festival hits SZ 戏剧盛宴,第二届国际戏剧影像展即将开幕

Thirteen English and French plays and musicals, including Ben Whishaw’s “Julius Caesar” and “Hamlet” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, will be screened at Broadway’s two cinemas in Shenzhen.


‘Julius Caesar’

Plot: “Julius Caesar” is a tragedy by Shakespeare. The Bridge Theater staged it under the direction of Nicholas Hytner with Ben Whishaw as one of the leads.

Time & venue: 2:30 p.m., Aug. 18; 7 p.m., Aug. 24 (Broadway Cinematheque)


‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’

Plot: “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” is a play by Edward Albee. It examines the complexities of the marriage of a couple. Last year, a production directed by James Macdonald began at the Harold Pinter Theater in London, featuring Imelda Staunton and Luke Treadaway.

‘Twelfth Night’

Plot: “Twelfth Night” centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian. Viola (who is disguised as Cesario) falls in love with Duke Orsino, who in turn is in love with the Countess Olivia. Upon meeting Viola, Countess Olivia falls in love with her thinking she is a man. In 2002, Shakespeare’s Globe produced “Twelfth Night,” with Mark Rylance playing Olivia.

‘The Seagull’

Plot: “The Seagull” is a play by Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov. It dramatizes the romantic and artistic conflicts between the famous middlebrow story writer Boris Trigorin, the ingenue Nina, the fading actress Irina Arkadina and the symbolist playwright Konstantin Treplev. In 2017, Yury Butusov’s “The Seagull” is an exuberant feast of a theatrical performance.

‘King Lear’

Plot: “King Lear” depicts the gradual descent into madness of the title character after he disposes of his kingdom by giving bequests to two of his three daughters egged on by their continual flattery. In 2016, “King Lear” was staged by Royal Shakespeare Company, with Antony Sher in the lead role.

‘Follies’

Plot: “Follies” is a musical by Stephen Sondheim. The story concerns a reunion in a crumbling Broadway theater, scheduled for demolition. A London revival was performed in the Olivier Theater of the National Theater in 2017. The production was directed by Dominic Cooke, starring Imelda Staunton.

‘Hamlet’

Plot: Set in Denmark, Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” dramatizes the revenge Prince Hamlet is called to wreak upon his uncle, Claudius, by the ghost of Hamlet’s father. In 2015, Benedict Cumberbatch played “Hamlet” for a 12-week run. It was called the “most in-demand theater production of all time.”

‘The Tempest’

Plot: “The Tempest” is thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where the sorcerer Prospero, rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skillful manipulation. In 2013 Roger Allam played the role of Prospero at Shakespeare’s Globe in London.

‘Richard II’

Plot: “Richard II” is a history play based on the life of King Richard II of England (ruled 1377-1399). The Royal Shakespeare Company produced the play with David Tennant in the lead role in 2013.

Time & venues: 2:30 p.m., Aug. 26 (Broadway Cinematheque); 7:30 p.m., Aug. 18 (Broadway Cinema)


‘The Merchant of Venice’

Plot: “The Merchant of Venice” is a 16th-century play written by Shakespeare in which a merchant in Venice must default on a large loan provided by a Jewish moneylender. In 2015, Jonathan Pryce appeared as Shylock in “The Merchant of Venice.”

Time & venues: 7 p.m., Aug. 26 (Broadway Cinematheque); 7:30 p.m., Aug. 22 (Broadway Cinema)


‘Present Laughter’

Plot: “Present Laughter” is a comic play written by Noel Coward. The plot follows a few days in the life of the successful and self-obsessed light comedy actor Garry Essendine as he prepares to travel for a touring commitment in Africa. A Broadway revival opened in 2017, starring Kevin Kline as Essendine.

‘Cyrano de Bergerac’

Plot: “Cyrano de Bergerac” is a play written by Edmond Rostand. Although there was a real Cyrano de Bergerac, the play is a fiction of his life. In 2017, Denis Podalydès starred in Comédie-Francaise’s “Cyrano de Bergerac.”

Time & venues: 7 p.m., Aug. 28 (Broadway Cinematheque); 7:30 p.m., Aug. 19 (Broadway Cinema)


‘An American in Paris’

Plot: “An American in Paris” is a musical play inspired by the 1951 film of the same name. The musical opened on Broadway in 2015. Christopher Wheeldon directs and choreographs, with the cast led by Robert Fairchild.

Time & venues: 7 p.m., Aug. 29 (Broadway Cinematheque); 7:30 p.m., Aug. 21 (Broadway Cinema)
