Classic world operas shown in local cinemas 国家大剧院国际歌剧电影展登陆深圳
Thirteen Chinese and international operas, including Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly,” Bizet’s “Les Pecheurs de Perles” and Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin,” will be screened at Broadway’s two cinemas in Shenzhen.
‘La Traviata’
Plot: Teatro Real in Madrid presents opera “La Traviata” that brought Verdi’s legendary status through music, with a profound sense of humanity and a psychological portrayal of the characters.

‘Romeo et Juliette’
Plot: The world’s most famous love story comes to an operatic life presented by The Metropolitan Opera.

‘Madama Butterfly’
Plot: Presented by Teatro Real in Madrid, the tragic story of the geisha Cio Cio San, known as Madama Butterfly, touches all audiences. Puccini’s innate talent narrates the terrible conflict between two irreconcilable civilizations.

‘The Long March’
Plot: The Long March, a two-year tactical retreat of the Chinese Red Army to evade Kuomintang forces starting in 1934, is staged as a Chinese opera produced by the National Center for the Performing Arts.

‘Les Pecheurs de Perles’
Plot: Set in ancient times on the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Bizet’s “Les Pecheurs de Perles” presented by The Metropolitan Opera tells the story of how two men’s vow of eternal friendship is threatened by their love for the same woman.

‘You and Me’
Plot: The National Center for the Performing Arts’ Beijing opera “You and Me” is directed by Zhang Yimou. It tells the story of a king in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 B.C.) who reseumes his ties with his mother to express the great wisdom of filial affection.

‘Cendrillon’
Plot: With Joyce DiDonato as Cinderella capturing all hearts (not just Prince Charming’s), Massenet’s enchanting, sophisticated retelling of the classic fairytale makes its debut at Covent Garden in a charming and witty production by Royal Opera House.

‘The Beautiful Blue Danube — The Story of Johann Strauss’ 1872 U.S. Tour’
Plot: This opera presented by National Center for the Performing Arts is created with reference to Chinese book “Music, Art and Life — Li Lanqing’s Essays on Music.” John Strauss, the famous composer and conductor in Europe, toured the United States in 1872 and spread his name throughout the world.

‘La Sonnambula’
Plot: Just as a woman is about to marry her sweetheart, she is discovered asleep with a stranger by the entire village. The Metropolitan Opera transfers Bellini’s bucolic tale to a rehearsal room in modern New York. An opera company rehearses “La Sonnambula” and the singers are truly in love with each other.

‘Lucia di Lammermoor’
Plot: Lucia’s brother Enrico is horrified to learn she has fallen in love with his sworn enemy Edgardo. He hastily arranges her marriage to his associate Arturo. Edgardo and Lucia privately exchange rings before he leaves to fight in France. Royal Opera House presents a powerful and distinctive production of Donizetti’s tragic opera.

‘Simon Boccanegra’
Plot: National Center for the Performing Arts will present Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra,” starring Placido Domingo. It follows the Venetian Doge, the titular Simon Boccanegra, and his family, through a series of operatic tragedies. With an uprising, revenge and mistaken identities, the plot is designed to thrill.

‘Adriana Lecouvreur’
Plot: Adriana Lecouvreur is adored by many but she loves Maurizio, Count of Saxony, who desperately tries to extricate himself from his former lover, the Princesse de Bouillon. The production was presented by The Royal Opera.

‘Eugene Onegin’
Plot: Tchaikovsky’s setting of Pushkin’s timeless verse novel is presented by The Metropolitan Opera. The story concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasé rejection of a young woman’s love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend.
