In an ever more divisive world, we often forget how much richer and freer the exchange of culture and art has made us all.  Music has the power to push beyond hate and distrust to create unspoken communities between people of different backgrounds. On our third edition of EUPHORIA, an ongoing series featuring the best in European electronic dance music across China, we bring artists that have brought the diversity of sounds beyond the shores of European Continent into their new homes and enriched the lives of those around them. DJ FIRMEZA alongside other artists in Lisbon’s Principé label brought African rhythms to Lisbon´s Ghettos, Dinamarca mixed a world of influences many from his birth place of Chile and created the all embracing label Staycore in his home of Sweden, and DJ Bootsie helped introduce American Hip Hop to the burgeoning Hungarian music scene in the late 90’s. New rhythms crossed borders and ideas sprouted on the dance floor. Defying dogma and social expectations, these ideas grew into movements that have and will continue to change the world.  At the very essence of breaking musical borders we can also find Paris based DJ RETINA SET known for editing tracks and mixing obscure tunes with big hits while curating. So with a really diverse set of artists let’s again celebrate free-movement at EUPHORIA.

在这个分裂的世界里,我们常常忽略了文化和艺术带给我们的充实感与自由。音乐能够超越仇恨和疑虑,将不同背景的人聚集在一起。EUPHORIA, 落地中国三座城市,展现欧洲多元化的电子乐,即将带来此次系列活动的第三站--深圳。DJ FIRMEZA 和里斯本Principé厂牌的其他艺人一起将非洲节奏带到了里斯本贫民区;Dinamarca带着智利的气质,在家乡瑞典创建起Staycore厂牌。上世纪90年代末,DJ Bootsie将美国Hip Hop带入匈牙利的音乐圈。舞池新节奏跨越边界和思想,与教条和社会主流期望所抗争,思想的进步将继续改变着这个世界。另外,我们还邀请到最会用晦涩曲调混合热门金曲的法国DJ RETINA SET。来到EUPHORIA,来打破音乐的边界, 感受自由之声。

DJ Firmeza (Principé)


Outside of Portugal’s capital city of Lisbon lie many twisting complexes of social housing populated by Lisbon’s immigrant community. Here in the impoverished suburbs, the unemployment rate is high, and there are few chances for young men to climb up the social hierarchy.  Even the public transportation provides few links into those neighborhoods, separating them like an Island from the rest of Lisbon’s wealthier communities. Despite the physical and economic isolation, the residents of these barrios are rich in musical heritage.  Their neighborhoods are strong warm communities filled to the brim with sounds of Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America, the music of the diaspora.

 

As a child growing up in these neighborhoods, DJ Firmeza’s parents played folk music for him from their former home of Angola, and as a teenager he added to his tastes the musical styles of kuduro, baile funk, and ragga.  Already DJ-ing by age 12 playing weddings and parties to help support his family, he used to watch the D-I-Y street parties in the neighborhood of Quinta do Mocho and admired the likes of local heroes like DJ Nervoso. These elders of the scene used to hold court over impromptu 3-day-24 hours D-I-Y dance parties held in squares, parks, or wherever one could set up a sound system. Music on the streets became just a daily part of life, like buying groceries, or taking a bath. By 15, he started producing his own kuduro influenced beats, his productions and DJ skills landing him more paid gigs in mainstream music festivals. But there was no place to play the music that Firmeza grew up with, the “sounds of the ghetto.”  Promoters didn’t want the music of the slums at their shows, but it was in the slums that a truly unique culture was blossoming. 

 

In 2011 Principé Discos emerged, a label that finally gave a place for the sound of the Lisbon barrios. Founded partly by Marlon Silva (DJ Marfox) the music they released is called Batida. As Silva describes it, Batida means the beating of your heart after a car crash. The sound of Batida is a mash-up of the sounds of the barrios (kuduro, kizomba and tarraxinha) and the more mainstream dance music styles of house and techno. It’s unique to Lisbon, and its appeal is finally opening the gates of isolation for these once forgotten neighborhoods. Principe’s family of artists now fly around the world, from playing sets at BERGHAIN, to releases on WARP, to features on FADER, to non-stop invitations to festivals around the world, the sound of Lisbon has finally arrived, and it’s the sound of the ghettos. 

 

Already a seasoned veteran at 23, DJ Firmeza’s own productions are much more soulful then his young years would give away. Now he´s coming to Beijing and Shenzhen for his China shows.

葡萄牙首都里斯本城外许多移民居住区长期与里斯本其他富裕地区隔绝开来,这里不但失业率极高而且连公共交通也很少到达。尽管如此,他们的生活却充满了音乐,充斥着非洲、加勒比海和拉丁美洲的美妙声音。

 

DJ Firmeza生长于此并从小深受安哥拉民间音乐的影响,十几岁时开始喜欢kuduro,baile,funk和raggae这样的音乐。懂事的他为补贴家用,从12岁起便开始在各种聚会和婚礼上做起DJ。街头音乐是当地人生活非常重要的一部分,当他在Quinta do Mocho附近看到D-I-Y的街头party之后,就很欣赏DJ Nervoso这样的当地音乐人。15岁起,DJ Firmeza开始制作kuduro音乐。日以娴熟的音乐技能和丰富的演出经验,使得他在一些主流音乐节崭露头角。虽然贫民区并没有什么供年轻人施展才华的地方,但是一种独特的文化却正在那里悄然蔓延。

 

Principé厂牌创建于2011年,成为里斯本音乐的归属。创始人之一Marlon Silva (DJ Marfox) 发行的音乐叫做Batida。Batida的意思其实是车祸之后人的心跳。Batida结合了kuduro、kizomba、tarraxinha,以及house和techno,在里斯本是独一无二。如今,Principé厂牌的音乐人遍布世界各地,在BERGHAIN演出、在WARP发行音乐、出现在纽约著名FADER杂志,并不断受邀前往世界各地音乐节。里斯本贫民区的独特声音也终于传播到了世界各地。

 

虽然年仅23,但DJ Firmeza却已有着丰富的经验,他的音乐远比他同龄该有的气质显得更加成熟而深刻。


DINAMARCA (Staycore)



(Cristian Esteban) Dinamarca (Farías) was born under the bloody dictatorship of Pinochet in Chile. His family moved to Sweden under an Asylum application when he was only 2, and once in Stockholm, he lived in the immigrant neighborhood of Aby.  With his parents continously planning a return to Chile, Dinamarca always felt caught between the two worlds. After taking some community DJ classes at a youth center in his early teens, Dinamarca found his place, drawing from his diverse background to create a unique vision of dance music.   

 

His recent release pushes the envelope hard, mixing Latin grooves and into speeds that push the music on the edge of gabber or hardstyle, then speeding up to get nearly trance-y. It’s ass-shaking music, if your ass was occasionally put in a blender.  It’s music for people who don’t believe that dance music should be compartmentalized and segregated but rather hacked together with zero fucks given. 

 

The only rules for Dinamarca’s Staycore label is there are no rules.  Trying to understand the Staycore sound is trying to coin a term for twisting the nobs of a transistor radio / time machine that hops through multiple genres, cutting up snippets of pop music from the 90’s, industrial noise, Afro-beat, Bass music, gabber, all with screeching synths and Teletubby vocals.  Staycore’s music feels born of a generation that absorbed everything in fragments and spat it out more distorted than when it was consumed, perhaps social-commentary, perhaps genre-bending experimentation, or perhaps just randomized selection of an information over loaded world.   


(Cristian) Dinamarca出生在Pinochet独裁统治之下,两岁时因家人提出的“避难申请”移民瑞典,在斯德哥尔摩的Aby移民区生活过很长时间。期间,父母总计划着重返智利,年纪轻轻的Dinamarca经常感觉自己是被困在了两个世界之间。十几岁时,他开始了电子乐的视觉创作。

 

他的新歌混杂了拉丁音乐,极力推向gabber的边缘,加速至接近trance。他的音乐让你完全进入不停颤抖屁股的状态,想象一下把屁股放进搅拌机,大概就是这种感受。如果你相信音乐就应该是大杂烩混合起来,那么你真该听听他的歌。

 

Dinamarca的厂牌Staycore的规矩,就是‘没有规矩’。试图了解Staycore的音乐就像为扭转晶体管收音机或时光机而建造一个新系统以跳转到不同音乐类型,切割90年代流行音乐、工业噪音、非洲节奏、低音音乐和gabber风格音乐的片段,混着失真合成器和天线宝宝的声音。Staycore的音乐就像诞生于这样一个世代:在废墟中收集起所有碎片,然后变得扭曲。是社会舆论,是流派糅合实验,抑或只是信息超载世界的随机取样。

DJ BOOTSIE (BBE Records)


DJ Bootsie´s sound has been described as “DJ KRUSH meeting MADLIB on a crate digging session in Budapest”. Hip-hop, electronica, scratch, film music, folk songs, jazz and even a collaboration with the Hungarian State Opera-producer-turntablist Bootsie, himself a DMC has done it all. In his career of more than 20 years his tracks have been featured by the likes of Buddha Bar, CSI, Vogue and he has been the music director of the Hungarian Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

 

His latest EP record ‘Ég’ was released in December 2016, on which he reconciles new sounds with the well-known, old Bootsie style. Hip-hop, bass, trap, techno, ambient and film score-moods come together to create a balanced unity.

RETINA SET (Bye Bye Ocean)

 

Since 2015 RETINA SET has been making new tracks by blending obscure and percussive tunes with big hits, which immediately got picked up by such tastemaking artists as CHINO AMOBI, IKONIKA or SODA PLAINS. His rereading of Hip-Hop, R'n'b tracks quickly became his trademark and revealed avant-gardism and versatility. No wonder he soon became the darling of various blogs and webzines.


In the meantime his DJ Sets, inspired by diverse musical genres going from Jersey club music to Dancehall as well as Footwork and Gqom, Grime and the UK Bass scene quickly took off in Paris and he soon after got booked internationally next to such artists such as KODE 9, MUMDANCE or NEANA.


He is a recurrent guest of Rinse France and Hotel Radio Paris, while being a  promoter and resident DJ of the infamous Bye Bye Ocean club nights, and more over close to the new Bérite Club Music movement initiated by TEKI LATEX. Retina Set is definitely a major actor of the french club music's recent revival.


自2015年以来,RETINA SET一直用晦涩的音乐与热门金曲结合制作新歌,备受CHINO AMOBI,IKONIKA,SODA PLAINS等音乐人的关注。对Hip-Hop,R'n'b的重新解读成为他鲜明的标签,充分显示他音乐的前卫和多元化。因此,他很快便成为网络和各大博客的焦点。

 

同时,他的DJ Sets受到泽西岛俱乐部音乐、Dancehall、Footwork、Gqom,Grime以及英国bass的启发,迅速在巴黎脱颖而出。不久之后他便同KODE 9,MUMDANCE和NEANA等人一样,受到国际上的关注。

 

他是Rinse France和Hotel Radio Paris的常客,同时也是Bye Bye Ocean俱乐部之夜的发起人和常驻DJ,他绝对称得上是法国俱乐部音乐复兴的中坚力量。
