There is a centuries old, and rather odd Catalan tradition, de-trousered little characters, each called a Caganer. They are caught short, they are crouching and they are one of the biggest sellers at the Barcelona Christmas market. And it's a good way to explain the players ahead of the Catalan election. Now we start with this man, this is Carles Puigdemont. He's the former president and it's his actions that have led to this election, because his government illegally declared independence, and he is the presidential candidate for Together for Catalonia, but he is in self-imposed exile in Belgium. If he comes back to Spain, he faces arrest and possible charges. Now, another presidential candidate: this is Oriol Junqueras and his party, Esquerra, or the republican left, are doing well in the polls, but he is in prison and he faces allegations of sedition and rebellion.
And the third independence party is CUP. Now they are radical, hard line left. This is Anna Gabriel. She's the party spokeswoman. They don't have a formal leader. They want Catalonia out of Spain, out of the EU and out of Nato too. Unity parties. Where's Rajoy? Mariano Rajoy now, Spanish prime minister, his party, Popular Party or PP—well technically not in this case—but PP don't traditionally do well in Catalonia. What they are saying though is they want the thousands of companies who disappeared because of the volatility in the last few weeks to come back, giving them tax incentives. And we have Pedro Sánchez of the Socialists. Now they are doing well as well as in the polls. What they are offering is to say we want to give financial autonomy at a greater sense to Catalonia. And this is a party to watch out for. Citizens, this is Albert Rivera. They are saying that they can offer something new. And they're quite young, quite charismatic politicians and they're also pro EU and like these two, they are staunchly against separatism. So three for unity, three for separatism, and in the polls, they are roughly neck and neck.
