百科诗派“国际日”暨“2018年度百科之友”颁奖典礼在京圆满召开!
2019年5月27日下午,百科诗派首个“国际日”暨“2018年度百科之友”颁奖典礼在京举行。此次活动地点为后海“知间Coffee”,百科诗派创始人殷晓媛全程中英文主持。2018-2019上半年前后参加过七次百科诗派组织的“主题跨界创作”的福建湄洲岛诗人潘黎明,赴京出席了本次颁奖,领取了奖杯和百科诗派12周年限量版文创纪念品。特邀颁奖嘉宾为:比尔·沃拉克及此前参加百科诗派“国际日”工作会议的约翰·迪戈比和琼·迪戈比夫妇。参会的中方人员还包括:影视剧演员、话剧工作室创始人、诗人阿桐;诗人、画家玙姬;诗人往都;诗人、出版人子寒及海淀作协童锡来等。典礼结束后,中美诗人分别以双语朗诵原创诗歌作品,大家共同见证了诗歌的荣耀与当下诗歌先锋跨界创作的国际视野与愿景。
殷晓媛表示,今年是百科诗派首次评选“百科之友”,今后会设立相应国际奖项,以奖掖长期参与并支持百科诗派“智库型、泛性别主义创作”的国际友人。而“国际日”的活动形式更将持续进行下去,从美国、英国、意大利、西班牙、阿根廷等已有百科诗派合作方的诗歌阵地向世界其它国家迅速拓展。

First of all, please allow me to introduce our honorable guest from New York:
诗人、艺术家,长居新泽西,威廉帕特森大学创意写作教授。近期由Ekstasis Editions(出版社)出版第十五部诗集《赤裸的辩护》。诗歌在百余种刊物上发表。最近一部译著是与Mahmood Karimi-Hakak合译的《爱我甚于他者:Iraj Mirza诗选》(2014年、Cross-Cultural Communications出版)。译作散见《The Su Journal》《Basalt》 、《国际视界》、《世界诗刊》、《亚特兰大评论》等。评论及访谈见《巴黎圣母院评论》、《波斯文化遗产》、《Gargoyle》、《南方人文评论》及《质数》杂志等。曾因在印度访学及旅行获得“国家基金”人文学科津贴及两次富布赖特海斯奖金。2007年,当选唯爱社(美国规模最大、历史最悠久的跨宗教和平正义组织)赞助的驻伊朗友好代表团成员。2010年夏,获得国家亚洲教学财团主办的中国及日本的实地调研名额。五次荣获印度诗歌节代表诗人。2016年荣获罗马尼亚及意大利举办的米哈伊·爱明内斯库国际诗歌节代表诗人。曾参加在意大利佩扎罗举办的佩扎罗国际诗歌节,西昌邛海·“丝绸之路”国际诗歌周,科索沃Ethnofest诗歌节、中国成都国际诗歌节等。
Bill Wolak is a poet who lives in New Jersey and teaches Creative Writing at William Paterson University. He has just published his fifteenth book of poetry entitled The Nakedness Defense with Ekstasis Editions. His poetry has appeared in over a hundred magazines. His most recent translation with Mahmood Karimi-Hakak, Love Me More Than the Others: Selected Poetry of Iraj Mirza, was published by Cross-Cultural Communications in 2014. His translations have appeared in such magazines as The Sufi Journal, Basalt, Visions International, World Poetry Journal, and Atlanta Review. His critical work and interviews have appeared in Notre Dame Review, Persian Heritage Magazine, Gargoyle, Southern Humanities Review, and Prime Numbers Magazine.
Mr. Wolak has been awarded several National Endowment for the Humanities scholarships and two Fulbright-Hays scholarships to study and travel in India. In 2007, he was selected to participate in a Friendship Delegation to Iran sponsored by the Fellowship of Reconciliation, America’s largest and oldest interfaith peace and justice organization. During the Summer of 2010, Mr. Wolak was awarded a Field Study Opportunity in China and Japan by the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. He was selected to be a featured poet at festivals in India five times: at the 2011 Kritya International Poetry Festival in Nagpur, at the 2013 Hyderabad Literary Festival, at the Tarjuma 2013: Festival of Translators in Ahmedabad, at the 2014 Hyderabad Literary Festival, and at the 2017 Goa Arts and Literary Festival. Recently, he was a featured poet at The Mihai Eminescu International Poetry Festival in Craiova, Romania; Europa in versi, Lake Como, Italy; The Pesaro International Poetry Festival, Pesaro, Italy, The Xichang-Qionghai Silk Road International Poetry Week, Xichang, China, The Ethnofest, Pristina, Kosovo, and the Chengdu International Poetry Week, Chengdu, China.

John Digby was born in London. He began writing surrealist poetry from the early 1970s. He was influenced by Breton, Eluard, Arp, and Desnos. Although he was living in England, the first publications of his surrealist poetry was in America. He worked for a time with George Hitchcock on Kayak Magazine in California. Later, he was published in Wales, France, Belgium, Germany, and Colombia. Three book of his poetry were published by Anvil Press Poetry in London: The Structure of Bifocal Distance (1974), Sailing Away from Night (1978), and To Amuse a Shrinking Sun (1985). These were illustrated with his black and white collages, a medium he has continued to expand from figurative to abstract over the past several decades. His poetry is included in the Penguin Book of English Surrealism. In England he was the co-founder of Caligula Books. For the last 38 years, he has lived in Oyster Bay, New York, where he cofounded (with his wife) The Feral Press, which publishes digitally produced limited editions of illustrated booklets of poetry and short fiction. As of 2017, the press has migrated to New Feral Press at www.newferalpress.com For the past few years he has been collaborating with Hong Ai Bai and Rukui Chen on an extensive project devoted to English improvisations of classical Chinese poetry.

Joan Digby is Professor of English and Director of the Honors College at Long Island University. With her husband, John Digby, she has edited several anthologies of poetry and written a classic work on collage materials, aesthetics, and techniques. Together, they co-founded The Feral Press, now New Feral Press, a small press publishing limited editions primarily of poetry. Their more than 300 publications are collected by many university libraries. Joan has published both academic work on higher education and several books of poetry. Her last collection, Medicine Women, was translated into Chinese by Zhou Si. Her poems have also appeared in magazines in various languages. Most of her poems are about the animals she cares for daily—cats and horses, as well as camels.

百科诗派正式成立于2007年。今年是百科诗派创派12周年。今年在我平台刊登出本人1998年创作发表的散文诗《黑洞》资料与相关访谈,也有众多读者认为,该文章在当时的科技文化背景下,难能可贵地集科普性与前瞻性于一身,即应当视作百科诗派实际缘起的时间,这也是一种可参考的观点。
Founded in 2007, Encyclopedic Poetry School , is celebrating her 12th anniversary this year. It is also suggested by readers that the year of initiation was actually 1998 because my first encyclopedic work “Me, the Black Hole” was published that year. It is regarded as a mature prose poetry which combined science with prescience, in spite of limitations in that underdeveloped age. That sounds reasonable.
在这12年中,百科诗派发展态势蓬勃,在国内外都取得了丰硕的成果。在“智库型写作”宗旨下,百科诗派一直秉承着在主题上“深挖掘+广涉猎”,素材上“古典瑰宝+前沿数据”,在形式上“语义学传承+视觉与算法先锋实验”的创作拓进,以汉语、英语、法语、德语、西班牙语为创作源语言,创作的高效性、丰富性、高技术含量和可识别性有目共睹。
During the 12 years, Encyclopedic Poetry School has been expanding, thriving and prospering, gaining remarkable achievements home and abroad. “exhaustive reading + in-depth writing”, “classical volumes + digital data”, “linguistics+algorithms”... the all-embracing while selectively-exploiting posture has enabled us to think panoramically and create prolifically, in Chinese, English, French, German and Spanish. The efficiency, erudition, purity and identifiability in the works of our members and project members are all proven qualities.
我们的作品除在国内刊物广泛发表之外,还被翻译为包括英语、德语、日语、西班牙语、意大利语和希腊语在内的多国语言,在海外出版和发表,仅2018-2019年,就在美国《Mad Swirl》《Pinyon Review》、意大利《La Macchina Sognante》、阿根廷《Revista Excéntrica》和《BUENOS AIRES POETRY》刊发作品,其中多个刊物还是以“百科诗派特辑”的形式集体登场,其中我在《Mad Swirl》发表的作品作为唯一一位中国诗人入选《MAD SWIRL》“2018年度最佳”年鉴。我本人这两年内,一是与Bill Wolak先生在纽约出版了一部译著《成为一条河流》以及在哈瓦那出版一部合译诗集《纬经与背面——中古诗人诗选》。
Our works have been translated into English, German, Japanese, Spanish, Italian and Greek, etc., and published widely at the international level. In the most recent 2 years,our works have appeared in "Mad Swirl""Pinyon Review"(US), "La Macchina Sognante"(Italy), "Revista Excéntrica" and "Buenos Aires Poetry"(Argentina), the majority of which in the form of "E.P.S. Special Column". I was the only Chinese poet collected in the anthology "The Best of Mad Swirl : v2018", and last year my Chinese translation of Mr. Bill Wolak's bilingual poetry anthology "Become a River" was published in New York alongside the original English, and the poetry collection "Trama y Enves" (Colección Sur Editores) by Chinese&Cuban poets I co-translated was published in Havana.
2016年我们完成了百科诗派全套VI系统最新版的升级,发行了百科诗派博物历、十周年纪念款明信片套装、文化衫、书签及高端商务文创(豪华保温杯、U盘)套系,2017年出版了“百科诗派创派十周年年鉴”系列图书,2018年设计了“人工智能纸魔方”(六国语版)视觉+行为艺术项目,2019年“创派12周年铂金VIP茗茶套系”,包括众位名家加盟赋诗的书法高定雕版款“斗士红”、慧苑坑水仙精华版“智者黑”,以及纪念人类历史上首张黑洞照片问世的宇宙诗篇系列“黑洞纪念版”。
In the year 2016 we upgraded our VI design to the current version, released "Natural History Series" calendar , commemorative postcards, T-shirts and business gifts (premium thermos, USBs), in 2017 we published "10th Anniversary Series" anthologies, in 2018 "A.I. Papercube"(multilingual version) and in 2019 "12th Anniversary Deluxe Tea Set for Platinum VIPs, including "Ruby Warrior"(custom: calligraphy wood-carving box) and "Obsidian Sage"(first-class Shui Hsien tea), and "Black Hole Special Series".
我们的著作被包括美国国会图书馆、大英图书馆、俄罗斯国家图书馆、捷克国家图书馆、挪威国家图书馆、法国国家图书馆、耶鲁大学图书馆、牛津大学图书馆、斯坦福大学图书馆、意大利驻华大使馆、奥地利驻华大使馆在内的一百余家国家图书馆、世界顶级名校图书馆和大使馆收藏。俄罗斯国家图书馆采编部部长T.V.彼得鲁先科将百科诗派著作誉为“横贯当代中国诗坛的百科诗学主义之强流”,多米尼加国家图书馆馆藏发展部部长Glennys Reyes Tapia则称之为“博大文化代表、书志编纂研究瑰宝”。
Our books have been included in 100+ national libraries and university libraries including Library of Congress(US), British Library, Russian State Library, National Library of the Czech Republic, National Library of Norway, La bibliothèque nationale de France, Yale University Library, Bodleian libraries of Oxford University, Stanford Library, Italian Embassy in China, Austrian Embassy in China. T. V. Petrusenko, Head of Acquisition Department, National Library of Russia, referred to the works by Encyclopedic Poetry School as “a new trend of contemporary Chinese poetry”, and Glennys Reyes Tapia, Head of Collection Department, BNPHU, described them as “bibliographical treasure of their (Chinese) culture”.
在国际译介方面,我们与来自美国、瑞典、爱尔兰、英国、澳大利亚、西班牙、阿根廷、印度、日本、古巴、洪都拉斯、哥伦比亚、玻利维亚、厄瓜多尔等的八十余位国际诗人建立了翻译合作关系,这些译文相继并将继续在《诗林》、《诗江南》等刊物上发表。
We have established cooperation with 100+ contemporary poets in U.S., Sweden, Ireland, U.K., Australia, Spain, Argentina, India, Japan, Cuba, Honduras, Columbia, Bolivia and Ecuador with their exclusive authorization, and have helped to publish their works in leading literary magazines in China including “Shilin”, “Poetry Jiangnan”, etc.
“百科之友主题跨界创作工坊”是我们的重要项目,参与创作者有2015年度艾略特诗歌奖评委会主席,2018年荣获皇家文学协会出版物奖的国际著名诗人帕斯卡尔•葩蒂,有现任洪都拉斯民事登记部部长罗兰多•卡檀等,还包括各大世界名校教授及文学研究机构专家、植物学家、认知神经专家、文化人类学家、插画师、装置艺术家、法官、企业高管、影视制作人、新闻工作者......目前创作出各类综合文本、摄影、绘画、装置、音乐、对联、朗诵、书法作品一百七十余件。
“Creative Writing & Integrated Art Workshop” is one of our most important long-term project, members of which include international poets like Pascale Petit, the RSL Ondaatje Prize winner 2018, and The representative of the intervention board of the National Registry of Persons (RNP) of Honduras, Rolando Kattan, professors in top universities, academic scholars, botanist, neurocognition expert, judge, company executives, filmmakers, journalists as well as writers, dramatists, musicians and visual/installation/photography/calligraphy artists.
为奖掖在百科诗派“主题创作”中做出重大成绩的诗人、艺术家和学者,我们设立了“年度百科之友”奖项,自2018年开始以年度为单位进行公开评选。
To reward those who have scored impressive achievements, and to encourage further creativity and Innovation, we have established this award, and 2018 was the first year.
在本次线上+线下评选中,我们共收到有效网络投票3565票,网络100字以上留言84条,“百科之友”初评评委投票15票,百科诗派核心成员终评投票18票,潘黎明以1164票总票数的绝对优势胜出。
During the online+offline voting which lasted two months, there were 3565 valid votes in total, and 85 comments(more than 100 words), 15 votes from long-list judges and 18 votes from short-list judges. Pan Liming won with 1164 votes.

Pan Liming, who was born in a national tourist resort - Meizhou Island, birthplace of the sea goddess Mazu and the cradle of Mazu culture. All the vicissitudes in his life has polished his talent, bestowing him with astounding perceptiveness, tenacity and profundity, with which he became a towering figure among the mediocrities. "To comprehend the essence out of representation, and to dive deep beneath distraction". From his novel angle, he has been extracting, deconstructing and exalting each frame of scene in this kaleidoscopic world, writing in an untrammelled way as if in his element with various themes: philosophy, astronomy, sports, music and sculpture art… His works have exploited undiscovered possibilities of transmissions between different domains and full-bodied flavor of “will to power” unwrapped from the cocoon of mundane life. His poetry, is an exemplar of syndicated-data writing, which Encyclopedic Poetry School has been advocating. The agony of war and fragments of dim memory, ineffable secrets of the wise, noise in historical scenes, feast of music and montage of athletics. He has acquired mastery of balancing emotion and reason, the realistic and the virtual, the wild and the solemn, the tough and the tender, the macroscopic and the microscopic, the capricious and the eternal... With the event-triggering variables, he created works with fabulous rhythms and striking picturesqueness. The diversification and experimentation in his works are noteworthy embodiment of "hermaphroditist writing" advocated by Encyclopedic Poetry School.
And at this moment, please allow me to give Pan Liming the trophy as the special presenter of Encyclopedic Poetry School.

Years of focused self-development has led Pan Liming to recognizable personal style and high-performence zone. His works are have veins of humanity that stretch from the turmoil of reality to the realm of idealism. He strategically finds footholds along flows of continuous, intermittent and transitional narrations, and formed his own rhythm and flow. His structural evolvement was like spirals of energy, climbing with momentum of inspirations. all the interrelated things co-existing in his poems- knowledge and imagination- are both powerful and semiotic, which have enabled him, a Mazu believer, to find more profound meaning in Chinese language, and faith in poetics itself, and in his unyielding acquisition of knowledge and encyclopedic writing in “Creative Writing & Integrated Art Workshop”. This is the second time in my life that I have been in Beijing, and the second time to meet Ms. Yin the founder of Encyclopedic Poetry School. I feel so flattered and honored to receive such a prestigious award from Encyclopedic Poetry School, and I am also dazzled by this glittering Chinese-dragon-shaped trophy and it aroused in me a sense of pride.

A salute to Ms. Yin Xiaoyuan, I heartily admire her indomitable pioneering spirit and the platform for innovative thinking and encyclopedic writing she has created for poets, artists and experts in all academic fields. I also feel as new as The Ship of Theseus- this trophy is a symbol of original drive for poetry beyond skills or any linguistic strategies. Under the guidance of encyclopedism, I will strive for noblest poetic personality and best-informed quality that stand the test of time.
精微、奥妙无穷而博大精深的百科精神是值得赞美的,它给我带来了思考的快乐,思想的激励和精神的慰藉。对我来说它就是一片崭新的天地,特别是智库型创作,它让我感受到——智慧向来就存在,思想也无所不在,百科诗派的诗人们转识成智,贯通东西,以超然的姿态承载着大使命的召唤。而百科诗派倡导的泛性别主义更是打破了身份的定位,让我们的写作——这持久的意志愈显纯清。2018年,是我的诗歌创作进入转折的一年。这一年,我的艺术馆正式开业了。我的艺术馆文化发展有限公司也正式成立了。而我的写作,也在这样的一个背景下进入了一种飞升的阶段,特别是在百科诗派这个平台上,我以一种前卫的创作尝试,在百科诗派创始人殷兄的鞭策与鼓动下,接二连三地创作了出了一批新作。这是我自以为最重要的一组作品,是里程碑式的作品——每一次创作我都全力以赴,以至于我觉得我得到了神助般的膂力。特别是【戴面纱的基督】,最具挑战,但我照样能找准切入点,很好地把两位雕塑大师对基督的理解在诗里做了无缝衔接,深入浅出地抒发了宗教信仰与艺术精神的深厚内涵与两者交互的情感世界。我觉得,我的写作是能让人一再回味的:我的诗歌语言总能在文字中呈现为一种健康的,具体的而又充满活力的流荡,总能在词与物之间探究出那些隐微的差别与联系,看似率性,随意,但却是如此清新,自然,充满了对智力的挑战,仿佛一粒粒清冽的水珠,是对百科精神最好的礼赞。
The redoubtable encyclopedists who write with such enigmatic subtlety and immense erudition, they have brought me into excitement and joy of meditating, cogitating and ruminating. One door after another was opened before me, and a brand-new world was there outside when I broke through the bottleneck. “to think panoramically and create prolifically”- omnipresent and everlasting awareness is always around us, while the members of E.P.S. turned the amorphous awareness into universal wisdom an enormous sense of mission. And “Hermaphroditism” they advocate shattered gender barriers, and enabled the act of writing focus more on free will. In the year 2018, my poetry writing has made milestone improvement. And in the same year, "MyArt Restaurant&Hotel" was open and MyArt Cultural Development Corporation was founded. Under these circumstances, I took a major leap forward, and started experiments in avant-garde writing. With Ms. Yin as my mentor, I finished a series of encyclopedic works, works of most importance in my life- they were monumental in my writing career. I wrote these poems with all my brain cells activated, every muscle in my fingers tensed up, I almost heard heavenly music that flowed through the lines. Especially Veiled Christ, the most challenging topic, which involved two masters in the history of sculpture. Antonio Corradini and Giuseppe-Sanmartino. However, I managed to combine their ideas about Christ into a harmonious composition, I found the invisible but sublime cord between faith and art. I have the confidence that my works stand up to careful reading, with their vitality and lyricism, I take these poems as my personal tribute to E.P.S., for inspiring me and encouraging me with unparalleled charisma.

It must have been Salvador Dalí who first brought the word surrealism into my life with his astonishing paintings and drawings. I remember clearly the first book of his paintings available in the US. It had a gold, glossy cover on which one of his paintings was depicted. I still own a copy of it today. His paintings were breathtaking: a simple horizon line bisected the canvas and in the foreground appeared the most astonishing juxtapositions and transformations, all presented in a hyperrealistic style—clear, full of light, and pulsating with desire.

Other Surrealist artists followed who had a great influence on me: Max Ernst, Man Ray—who had lived in the town where I grew up, Ridgefield, New Jersey—René Magritte, Hans Bellmer,Yves Tanguy, Leonora Carrington, Marcel Duchamp, and Dorothea Tanning. It was these artists that first drew me to investigate Surrealism, and it was these artists that I went in search of initially in bookstores, then later in New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

It was not too much later that I encountered Surrealist poetry. André Breton came first, of course. I read whatever translations I could find of his poetry, then his manifestos and his novel, Nadja. All of these had a profound effect on me. I had encountered a form of writing celebrating the imagination with the most startling juxtaposition of images and the invention of such elaborate dreamscapes. Other Surrealist poets also became important to me such as Paul Éluard and Robert Desnos.

While studying Comparative literature at Rutgers University in 1975, I was fortunate enough to meet and take classes with Nathanel Tarn, who had spent a few surrealist years in Paris and who knew the major artists and poets, including André Breton. Tarn encouraged me to write to his English friend John Digby, who was a Surrealist poet and a collage artist. I corresponded with Digby for several years, and at some point, he invited me to visit with him in England. In the summer of 1977, I flew to London to spend a few weeks with John. During that visit, John and I spent a week in Paris meeting such poets as Ted Joans, Joyce Manour, who I later translated from French into English, and Abdul Kader El Janaby.

When I returned from Paris, I concentrated on publishing Dream Helmet, a literary magazine that I edited. In the process of publishing that magazine, the world of American Surrealism opened before me. First, I began to correspond with the poet Paul Grillo. Through Paul, I was introduced to Ira Cohen, who was then living in Kathmandu, Nepal. Ira, in turn, introduced me to Charles Henri Ford. In this manner, I gathered the major contributors to the first and only issue of Dream Helmet.

Nevertheless, it is John Digby who has continued to be my mentor in all things surreal, and we have remained close friends for over forty years. John did the collages for my first book of poetry, Pale As an Explosion in 1977. Now he runs his own press with his wife Joan called The New Feral Press out of Oyster Bay, New York. The Digbys remain two of the great joys in my life; we get together frequently, and they have been kind enough to publish twelve of my books over the years, all collaged by John and designed by Joan. As a matter of fact, it is entirely because of John and Joan Digby that I am lucky enough to be with you today here in Beijing. So, in a mysterious way, my encounter with Surrealism has led me here, where it has been my pleasure to explain to you a little bit about my artistic background.

[5] 汉斯·贝尔默(Hans Bellmer)1902年生于德国,画家、雕塑家、摄影家。令他一举成名的并不是他的绘画作品或雕塑作品,而是他的玩偶摄影作品。他在1934年制作了一具真人比例的木制人偶,以球体装置为关节,用纸和塑料为肌体,内部装配机械装置,娃娃的身体可以随意拆卸和组装,这些玩偶在他手中呈现出一种虚无颓废的生活情调。因其人偶创作被纳粹分子指责为“堕落”的象征,他在纳粹迫害下逃亡。

[8]马塞尔·杜尚(法语:Marcel Duchamp,中国大陆翻译为马塞尔·杜尚 [1] 、台译杜象,全名亨利·罗贝尔·马塞尔·迪尚(Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp)(1887年7月28日-1968年10月2日)。他是一位法国艺术家,二十世纪实验艺术的先锋,对于第二次世界大战前的西方艺术有着重要的影响,是达达主义及超现实主义的代表人物和创始人之一。马塞尔·杜尚 (Marcel Duchamp,1887-1968),纽约达达主义的团体的核心人物。出生于法国,1954年入美国籍。 他的出现改变了西方现代艺术的进程。可以说,西方现代艺术,尤其是第二次世界大战之后的西方艺术,主要是沿着杜尚的思想轨迹行进的。因此,了解杜尚是了解西方现代艺术的关键。
[9]多萝西娅·坦宁(DorotheaTanning)(1910—2012)美国超现实主义画家、雕塑家、作家和诗人。超现实主义运动和达达派的重要参与者与见证人。她与20世纪艺术大师级人物如:马塞尔·杜尚、萨尔瓦多·达利、帕布罗·毕加索等都是好友,成为艺术精英圈的女主人。坦宁是一名女性主义者,从不让丈夫恩斯特称她为“妻子”,且终身未育。

When I was a young man in London, I bought a Penguin book of Chinese Poetry and it changed my life. The book opened me to a culture I had never known before, and the poets drew me into their world of observation. Their condensed reflections on nature: mountains, village life, the seasons, flowers, every detail of their surroundings fascinated me. Fifty years later I am still in love with Chinese poets and their poetry. I am most enamored of the Tang poets, and my wife who loves camels, is most enamored of Tang san cai figurines of camels. In fact, my wife’s interest in China is focused entirely on camels. One year when we went to Dunhuang, she went on a camel trek into the desert for a few days to sleep in the dunes by the side of her camel. She is also a member of the Wild Camel Protection Foundation with a breeding center for this rare species.

In my home I have an entire room devoted to books about Chinese poetry, art, history, architecture and culture. That I why I have come to China four times and am visiting with you today. I am honored to be here among poets and artists. I treasure your work and hope to contribute to the interest in Chinese poetry and art among English speaking people.

我只希望自己现在再年轻一些,可以重新开始学习,学会像你们一样说中文。但你们也看到我已满头白发。令人遗憾的是,这样的奇迹不会发生了,虽然我如此钟爱和敬畏中国文化的各个领域,并且直到今天还为它们惊艳不已。
