讲座简介:The talk aims to present several possible meanings of Li (禮) as they appear in the Analects and to link them with the question of Li's bindingness. Depending on which of these different and distinct meanings of Li is adopted as the operative meaning for the key texts where Confucius emphasises Li's bindingness, the legal philosophical implication of Confucian teachings may differ greatly. The talk also proposes to investigate the meaning of 'bindingness' (約) when we say we are bound by Li, by law or by ethical rules.

座谈简介:Corruption—especially bribery—is a significant legal and business risk for multinational firms, especially those working in emerging markets. When a firm’s employees or agents pay bribes to government officials, or engage in other forms of corrupt conduct, they may be subject to prosecution not only under the laws of the country where the bribes were paid, but also under the laws of their home jurisdiction, and potentially other jurisdictions as well. This panel will consider how lawyers in a variety of roles and practice areas help their clients address, mitigate, and manage corruption risks, and will also explore more general legal and policy questions regarding the legal framework for regulating transnational corruption.

讲座主题:Enhancing the Power of Out-of-Distribution Detection via Sample-Aware Model Selection

讲座摘要Many deep learning systems have achieved state-of-the-art recognition performance when the training and testing data are identically distributed. However, neural networks make high-confidence predictions even for inputs that are completely unrecognizable and outside the training distribution, leading to a significant decline in model prediction performance or even complete failure. Therefore, the detection of out-of-distribution (OoD) testing samples is of great significance for the safe deployment of deep learning models in open-world applications. In this work, we propose a novel framework for sample-aware model selection to enhance the effectiveness of OOD detection and identify distributional shifts of features at different levels. Our algorithm determines, for each test input, which pre-trained models and which layer of features are able to recognize the test input as an OOD sample.

讲座主题:Impacts of Natural Hazards on Water Treatability

讲座摘要Frequency and intensity of natural hazards such as prolonged drought, wildfire, torrential rain, and flooding are expected to increase due to climate change. These extreme conditions pose a great challenge for providing steady safe drinking water for millions of people, especially in megacities. Understanding the water quality under these extreme weather conditions could help for sustainable and resilient designs and water resource management. This presentation will show the consequences of two types of natural hazards due to climate changes on drinking water safety. Specifically, the temporal variations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors from natural forested watersheds were examined after wildfires in California and hurricanes in South Carolina, USA. Results of these studies illustrate chemical characteristics and dynamics of water quality after natural hazards. Proactive management and alternative treatment options are needed to sustain safe drinking water supply under the changing climate.

讲座摘要:维生素是七大营养素之一,是机体不能自身合成或合成量不够,需要食物中补充。维生素在食品,饲料,药品中具有广泛应用,其合成路线与合成效率对绿色制造,安全生产,降低成本具有重要意义。合成生物技术是近年来新型的交叉前沿技术,广泛应用在多个领域,尤其利用合成生物技术高效合成营养化学品具有很好发展与前景。本报告将以维生素营养化学品为例,具体介绍细胞工厂构建中的基因编辑与组装,表达与调控,途径与酶的设计改造策略,及无细胞多酶体系催化技术,实现维生素生物合成的机理解析及目标化学品的高效合成。
