1. Duzgun, Eren. 2018. ‘Property, Geopolitics, and Eurocentrism: The “Great Divergence” and the Ottoman Empire’. Review of Radical Political Economics 50 (1): 24–43.
The Ottoman Empire has thus far remained at the margin of the “Great Divergence” debate. Relatedly, no systematic attempt has been made to overcome Eurocentric views about the early modern Ottoman Empire. This paper seeks to fill this gap by problematizing and re-historicizing arguably the core concept of the Great Divergence debate, that is, capitalism.

2. Edwards, Zophia. 2018. ‘Labor, Agency, and State-Building in Trinidad and Tobago: Toward a Postcolonial Sociological Approach to Development’. Journal of Historical Sociology 31 (2): 134–53.
Existing development theories predict that factors such as natural resource wealth and the legacies of European colonizers inhibit development. However, the case of Trinidad and Tobago challenges these theories, as a resource‐rich former colony that has achieved high levels of development. This article examines what accounts for Trinidad and Tobago's development trajectory.

3. Edelmann, Achim, and John W. Mohr. 2018. ‘Formal Studies of Culture: Issues, Challenges, and Current Trends’. Poetics, 68 (June): 1–9.
We highlight four emerging themes: (1) the maturation of the field that has occurred over the last two decades, (2) the rise and formalization of the “cultural matrix” approach to studying culture, (3) the development of various efforts to advance a more formal theory of culture, and (4) the proliferation of Big Data and the development of new kinds of quantitative and computational approaches to the study of culture, including the emergence of a new area focused on “computational hermeneutics.” We conclude by discussing future opportunities, challenges, and questions in formalizing culture.

The purpose of the three studies described in this paper was to investigate the effects that reading fiction has on pro-animal attitudes and behavior. Although such effects have been widely claimed to exist by writers, activists and scholars, there has been scant experimental data to support that. In particular, there have been no experimental studies on the impact of fiction on attitudes toward animals over time and no experimental studies on the impact of fiction on behavior on behalf of animals. ... The first study to present experimental evidence on the impact of fiction on pro-animal attitudes and behavior.
5. Törnberg, Anton. 2018. ‘Combining Transition Studies and Social Movement Theory: Towards a New Research Agenda’. Theory and Society, June, 1–28.
This article addresses two central—yet insufficiently explored—characteristics of some social movements: i.) abrupt and rapid social mobilizations leading to ii.) the construction of novel political processes and structures. The article takes a novel approach to these issues by combining social movement literature and the notion of free social spaces with transition studies, which focuses on large-scale socio-technical transitions. This theoretical integration highlights the co-evolution between free spaces and societal transitions, and it is based upon complexity-thinking, which is essential to deal with non-linear dynamics.

6. Jasper, James M., Michael Young, and Elke Zuern. 2018. ‘Character Work in Social Movements’. Theory and Society 47 (1): 113–31.
Social movements carry out extensive character work, trying to define not only their own reputations but those of other major players in their strategic arenas. ... Characters have been overlooked in cultural analysis, possibly because they often take visual, non-narrative forms.
7. Gross, Neil. 2018. ‘Pragmatism and the Study of Large-Scale Social Phenomena’. Theory and Society 47 (1): 87–111.
Pragmatism has recently gained ground as a theoretical perspective in sociology. The approach is not without its critics, however. One common charge is that pragmatism is oriented toward the micro and not well suited for the explanation of meso- or macro-level events, processes, or outcomes. In this paper—a review essay—I consider whether the charge has merit.

8. Tarrow, Sidney. 2018. ‘Mann, War, and Cyberspace: Dualities of Infrastructural Power in America’. Theory and Society 47 (1): 61–85.
Not long after the completion of Michael Mann’s “quadrilogy” on The Sources of Social Power(1986–2012), social scientists began to interrogate the meaning of his concepts of “despotic” and “infrastructural” power. While we know that the former is the most evident sign of danger in times of war, less well understood is the role of infrastructural power in state/civil society relations.

9. Mann, Michael. 2018. ‘Have Wars and Violence Declined?’ Theory and Society 47 (1): 37–60.
For over 150 years liberal optimism has dominated theories of war and violence. It has been repeatedly argued that war and violence either are declining or will shortly decline. There have been exceptions, especially in Germany and more generally in the first half of the twentieth century, but there has been a recent revival of such optimism, especially in the work of Azar Gat, John Mueller, Joshua Goldstein, and Steven Pinker who all perceive a long-term decline in war and violence through history, speeding up in the post-1945 period.

Factional struggles accompanying “Westernizations” are interpreted here not as a conservative reaction against reforms, but as a process that preceded and enabled institutional restructuring.

11. Kearney, Matthew. 2018. ‘Totally Alive: The Wisconsin Uprising and the Source of Collective Effervescence’. Theory and Society, March, 1–22.
Collective effervescence plays a foundational role in the generation of society. Both the canonical explication of this concept, Émile Durkheim’s Elementary Forms of Religious Life, and current literature on the topic, are unable to distinguish between two plausible causes of effervescence: shared affiliation or collective action. This study reports a case of collective effervescence in which much of the assembled group had no prior affiliation.

12. Abrutyn, Seth, and Anna S. Mueller. 2018. ‘Toward a Cultural-Structural Theory of Suicide: Examining Excessive Regulation and Its Discontents’. Sociological Theory 36 (1): 48–66.
Despite its enduring insights, Durkheim’s theory of suicide fails to account for a significant set of cases because of its overreliance on structural forces to the detriment of other possible factors. In this paper, we develop a new theoretical framework for thinking about the role of culture in vulnerability to suicide

14. Hearn, Jonathan. 2018. ‘How to Read The Wealth of Nations (or Why the Division of Labor Is More Important Than Competition in Adam Smith)’. Sociological Theory 36 (2): 162–84.
This article challenges the idea that competition was central to Adam Smith’s thinking by scrutinizing the concept’s role in Smith’s work, particularly The Wealth of Nations. We will understand Smith’s perspective better if we avoid reading later developments of the concept, particularly in economics, back into Smith’s times and writings. Conversely, I argue that the division of labor is the governing idea providing the basic organizational structure of Wealth of Nations.

15. Erikson, Emily. 2018. ‘How Group Events Can Shape Network Processes’. Sociological Theory 36 (2): 187–93.
Social network analysis has trouble distinguishing between group processes in which several people interact concurrently and sequentially unfolding dyadic interactions. This article suggests that there are substantial differences between these two types of interactions and that the concept of events can help distinguish between the two.

16. Cook, Peta S. 2018. ‘Continuity, Change and Possibility in Older Age: Identity and Ageing-as-Discovery’. Journal of Sociology 54 (2): 178–90.
Traditionally, sociology has framed older age as a time of disengagement, withdrawal and reduced social integration. While now largely dismissed in contemporary sociological understandings of ageing, narratives of decline still feature heavily across social, media, and medical discourses. This negativity towards ageing could be at odds with how older people experience their age and identity. In this article, I will explore how 16 older people construct their self-identity.
