A recently released report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) reveals that No mainland Chinese locations were found to be amongst the world’s top 20 safest cities.

The report, released on Thursday this week, shows that while China’s neighbours performed incredibly well with Tokyo, Singapore, Osaka and Hong Kong all making the top 10, Beijing (32) and Shanghai (34) ranked behind Chicago (19) and just above Rio De Janeiro (37).

According to the EIU the list of safest cities is compiled not only by using information about the citizens’ personal safety, but also their digital security, health security, and infrastructure security.

If you’re wondering why Shanghai ranked so poorly, allow the EIU to enlighten you. “The rapid deployment of digital technologies in pursuit of the ‘smart city’ has also exposed vulnerabilities.

While smart city technologies no doubt bring benefits, the rush to embrace them carries considerable risk, said the EIU. “If investments in digital technologies are not accompanied by commensurate investments in cyber security, the consequences could be dire.

An entire city could be left in chaos if hackers were to shut down the power supply; a prospect city officials now need to plan against.”

So while you may feel safe walking around at night on your own on the streets of Shanghai, the fact that all of our delivery robots as well as our Alipay and WeChat Wallet accounts could be hacked may have contributed to Shanghai and Beijing being far down the list.

Here’s a list of the Top 10 safest Cities according to the report:

  1. Tokyo

  2. Singapore

  3. Osaka

  4. Toronto

  5. Melbourne

  6. Amsterdam

  7. Sydney

  8. Stockholm

  9. Hong Kong

  10. Zurich
