Shanghai, Beijing, and Hefei are the most attractive cities in China for foreign talents, according to a list published during the 16th Conference on International Exchange of Professionals in Shenzhen on Saturday.
It is the sixth consecutive year that Shanghai has topped the list.
Also in the top 10 list were Qingdao, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Chengdu, Nanjing, and Guangzhou.
Started in 2010, the list is the only one in China that is voted on entirely by foreigners.
The voters include Nobel Prize winners, recipients of the Friendship Award from China's government, and talents involved in "The Recruitment Program for Foreign Experts".
Hefei was something of a dark horse when it made it into third place on the list this year. Data from the Hefei Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs shows that 60 colleges and 13 scientific research institutions are based in the city.
The level of technological innovation in a city appears to be an increasingly important factor for people when they are assessing its attractiveness, according to a report by 21jingji.com.
Last year's survey shows that 52.7 percent of foreigners working in China are attracted by career opportunities in the country, and 45.4 percent were driven by an optimistic outlook for China's economy.
