The Center for the Art of East Asia (CAEA) was established in 2003 in the Department of Art History at the University of Chicago to support teaching and research and to encourage sharing of information and new methodologies in the rapidly growing field of East Asian art history. Under the directorship of Prof. Wu Hung, CAEA organizes international symposia and collaborative research projects, and creates digital resources. My talk will introduce some of our digital research and imaging projects, that involve information compilation, data management, and sharing of project results. Through the selection of thematic projects, we have been engaged in creating digital data and tools for preservation, presentation, and navigation of digital materials for art history.
The earliest of these projects was the scrolling paintings website begun for Wu Hung’s class on handscroll paintings, a format not well-represented in books, but affectively shown on the interactive website. We encourage other institutions to increase the number of digital scrolling paintings websites for teaching and research, and we share the open source software we developed to facilitate this. CAEA initiated projects on digital imaging of the art of Buddhist Cave temples in 2004. These cave shrines and their contents, fine stone sculptures, were seriously damaged in the early part of the twentieth century and their fragments scattered across the globe. We conducted research to identify these sculptures and carried out 3D scanning in many locations to record them and to digitally restore them to their former locations. This has generated new kinds of perceptions and comprehension of dispersed artworks and new kinds of knowledge of the historical and cultural contexts of these heritage sites. The expansion of these collaborative projects has brought us both recognition and support that presen.
