V5: your success in getting students in top American universities islegendary in the industry. What is it about your approach to identifying andrecommending schools that results in Chinese students getting into theuniversities they have been dreaming about ?
Choosing a university to apply to and graduate a program is actually not an easy process. And it’s quite complicated under taking and I’m going to explain why. Let’s start the issue of university. America fortunately have many great universities.
And many Chinese students want to be addicted to top 25 universities. And I always point this out students, not because I want to make their life difficult, but because I want to make them why the decisions. If for example, someone says I want to go to the top 25 universities and I am major in computer science or cell biology. Often times individual departments are not lying with the ranking of their school. So, for example a school may have No.1, No.2, No.3, may not have the department in biology in No.1, No.2, No.3. So for example, some schools which are very highrank generally because the ranking is general ranking. But induvial departments are not as highly ranked. So you have make a decision on your students, do I want to go to the university that is high ranked and have high reputation but the department I am going to apply to is not particularly very high whereas there is another school another university which is not rank as high but have the much stronger department in my field. This is what we called in English: a conundrum,which means it a real difficult problem to suffer.
You have to make the decision about whether reputation of school more important than education you going to get. It’s not the decision I make, but it is the problems I presents to students because I give them lots of information about different kind of schools and departments and they have to make decisions about how about how should we, what focus should we take. Should we focus on top 25 even if I could go to the university that is number 35 and get better education than go to number 25. That is a problem that a student everywhere in the world have to deal with, Chinese students have to deal with it too. This is something what we work together on and we have to agree upon, once students made their decision then I made good procession to provide the information about the school they are interested in or department they want to apply to. We have to make decision at first.
There are so many factors that going tochoose in school. I will give you a quick example. I consider the weather, some people may say why is weather is important? weather is important, because if you are in the school in an environment that is really not conducive for you to be successful, it does matter to type that school. For example, some students like warm weather they like comfortable environment, they like to be in forexample California, where we wear T-shirt ten months a year and where we winter 3 weeks summer is three weeks. The rest of years is very pleasant. But other students tell me "I like snow, I used to someplace where there is snow. I don’t like warm weather". So choosing schools in kind of location that is going to support your success is really important. Let me also mention you are going to be there for at least one year, possibly two years some students actually have even long program. So, you have to enjoy your life at that place. I usually give students information about the kind of Chinese cultural and life that available of community. For example, if you live in the city like New York , Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, there are many Chinese community, you find Chinese restaurants you find with Chinese supermarkets , where I live outside Los Angeles, we see all the Chinese movies,both meandering and Cantonese. Now you can go look good university mid Americaand never see a Chinese restaurant or Chinese restaurant. It might not the environment you want to be in. because you really enjoy your culture you really enjoy the opportunity of cooking you want to get your own Chinese vegetables and spices or something, don’t want to be there in certain part of America, even though the university is great.
So, we talk about everything when we talk about choosing university. Everything from the weather, to the kind of food, to the kind of restaurant available because the life in that place is really important. You going to living there. It going to be your home at least in a year or two. You have to be happy, you have to be satisfy there. I also make sure that when you choose university, we are choosing university you are going to be happy to there. So that means we put together on list. Every single university on that list is university you are happy educated. And you can get good education there. And if you are often admission you willing to go, we will never put a school, well I am not social and we get a loft .We place that the university you are going to be excited. But students always making their choices and way they make choices by get information from expert. They get the correct information and allow them to make them why the decision. So many the pieces of puzzle of how to choosing a university we want to apply to.
Appling to school is very much like buying lottery. I mean if you buy one lottery you have one chance to win. If you buy 10 lottery tickets you have ten chances to. So clearly if you apply two or three, you have two or three chances to get admit to great school. If you apply six to eight schools, you are geologically increase getting a good result. A good result from my counterviewis you have your choice when you finished. That is why I don’t recommend that you apply three or four universities because I will tell you are going to get rejections. Rejection is a part of process because American university do not have much room for everybody who want to go there. So, they have to say no to some people. So, the rejection is a part of process and need to expected. But if you now you know you there is a good chance you might project from some schools then how do you buffet the issue. You simply don’t apply to a small number of school. You apply as many as you can. Why? you only do this once in your life and you have to do right. So I recommend at least seven or eight universities,this will result in your getting at least three or four university saying we’d like to have you, that would be a wonderful problem to have. Having three or four university offer you admission is great because each one is different kind of university and each one offers each package.
When you apply for your master degree and get you accepted and then you can chance to apply to finical assistance, sponsor, jobs you can’t do that before acceptance, but you can do that once you are accepted. And you’ll find that some of your university may offer you money.Some of the universities may offer some teaching job or teacher assistantshipor research assistantship. American university is not poor they have lots of money but like to give to students they feel they can bring something to university. That is another reason why a strong application with strong statement that is not only open the door to admission, it also has the possibility to open the door to scholarship money. I am not just about few thousand dollars, we have place students in university who got fullscholarships. By that I mean for example, last year we place someone atstudents of Stanford university full scholarship paying nothing for their education. Why? because they have brought to the table in their expertiseability experience in their all the things they done while they under graduate.They are so attractive and they have so much to offer. So, the university in the position to offer to induce them to come. So, you can simply say yes you invite his admission. Or you can try to attractive because you have strong candidate they know other university also offer you scholar money or something else.
So choosing a university is a really complicated thing to do and require a lot of discussion and dialogue but once we have a list together the result is going be very positive one because we have create a list which ensure you have going to good outcome.
选择留学和中国的高考一样一样的啊，纠结到底上名气比较大但是一些专业排名并不是这么靠前的大学（类似浙大）还是综合排名不高但是一些专业排名老高老高的学校（类似上海财大）？
Allan 老师建议我们最好找一些专家来为我们的情况进行专门的评估，让那些资深，对美国大学了解透彻的专家（例如Allan）来为你分析利弊。毕竟，留学的费用不低，无论是时间成本上还是金钱成本上都耗费不起。
Allan还建议，在选择大学时，要全方位地考虑大学。大学所在地方环境，文化也是十分重要。因为毕竟是国外，天气，文化差异等因素会直接影响你在当地生活的情绪以及学习的快乐程度。
选择大学是一场赌博，你必须做好风险防范准备。即使你是王思聪，也要多申请几个大学。把鸡蛋放在同一个篮子里的行为是很愚蠢的。7-8个学校是比较理想的申请数量。
