About the Lecture

In Shanghai, one can not only see but live in the remnants of the city’ssemi-colonial legacy through a large number of structures built during thatperiod scattered throughout the city where the “glorious” foreign settlementsonce resided. The usage of these buildings had changed to accommodate thedemand of the high-socialist era that immediately followed. While some hadbecome public buildings, most of them had been altered to accommodate theinflux of residents and workers, which had been the case for decades until theopening up and reform era whereby these residents were allowed to own andtherefore trade their houses at will.

Today, private entrepreneurs and public sectors alike are investing heavily on therarity of these old structures as the city’s cultural capital. While someresidents voluntarily move elsewhere having received adequate compensation forgiving up their home for redevelopment, many stay put; among them, there areboth those who would move when the price is right and those who savor the senseof community. As many have argued, this case will exemplify, the localneighborhood committee of a prime real estate area has a limited role in bothproviding the services and governing the movement and sentiment of theseresidents; hence, the residents are resorting to their own methods andtechniques to maintain their status and livelihood.

This talk looks primarily at how the remaining residents interact with the potentialbuyers, renters, and investors, as well as their old neighbors who have already moved out but regularly return to such community to reconvene with their oldacquaintances in dealing and navigating with the abrupt social change broughtabout by both the economic and new state-sanctioned policies governing urban China. What this lecture hopes to reveal is the changing dynamics of ahistorically protected community located in a prime business area whereresidents of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds driven by differentincentives reside.
