Cremated remains
For anyone who has had to deal with the loss of a loved one and needs to take their ashes onboard then this will not be a problem. Cremated remains are allowed in carry-on luggage. However, they must be kept in a transparent container and it is essential that custom officers are able to clearly identify what is inside the container. Security offcials aim to be as respectful as possible and they will never open or sift through a crematory container. However, due to security reasons, the container will have to pass through the X-ray machine along with any other carry-on items.
Bowling balls
These are allowed however the TSA advise that you should always check with your chosen airlines' restrictions. Each airline has different rules in relation to how many bowling balls you can bring in a carry-on and in some cases bowling balls have to be checked in.
Artificial skeleton bones
For some reason or another Transportation Security America lets you travel with all the fake bones you wish.
Body armour
Although body armour is allowed TSA advise passengers to pack accordingly as the final decision as to whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint belongs to officers.
Fresh eggs
Yes you can take fresh eggs on a plane. Good luck getting them to your destination in one piece though!
Parachutes
TSA have stated that parachutes should always be packed separately from other baggage. Sometimes TSA officers decide that a bag must be opened to inspect a parachute. For this reason, passengers with parachutes are encouraged to add 30 minutes to the airlines' recommended arrival window.
Christmas trees
Delta Airline allows Christmas trees onboard. However, before going through airport security ensure that your tree is well prepared. You'll have to wrap the tree up like a gift to prevent pine needles from falling into the cabin and there are specific size restrictions to be aware of. Trees flying into Hawaii will have to be declared and they will have to pass an agricultural inspection.
Pies and cakes
Your freshly baked pies and cakes are welcome onboard. This could be handy for any long-haul flights as you know that you'll have some baked goodies to nibble on as and when you want.
Antlers
Most American Airlines permit antlers as carry-on items. However, there are strict rules. If they are attached to a skull, the skull needs to be wrapped and the points of the antlers need to be properly protected. You should also be aware that sometimes there are size requirements and extra fees for flying with antlers.
Falcons
Many Middle Eastern airlines permit falcons on board, as falconry is exceptionally popular in the region. Each airline has specific rules so it is strongly advised to call in advance to make sure you can bring your feathered friends on board.
Light Sabers
Unfortunately we haven't advanced that far in technology to be able to create real lightsabers. However, you can pack a toy lightsaber in your carry-on or checked bag.
Live fish
You are allowed to take live fish in water and a clear transparent container onboard after inspection by a TSA officer.
Live lobster
That's right even a 20-pound lobster can make it through security. Live lobsters are allowed to travel in your carry-on, although the TSA warns that an agent will "visually inspect" your lobster at security.
Sand
You might feel like taking a bit of your vacation back with you so it's good to know that taking a bit of sand won't be a problem.
Bread machine
A bread machine has also been announced as an item that'll be accepted by security officers. If you feel like taking a handy kitchen device such as this on your holiday then all you need to do is make sure that it will fit in the overhead bin or underneath the seat of the airplane.
Dry ice
If you see what you believe to be abnormal vapour coming out of someone's carry-on then don't panic. It will most likely be dry ice. People use dry ice to preserve food. While not always the preferred method of preservation, dry ice is allowed in carry-ons in quantities of 5.5 pounds or less. However, TSA recommends that you check with your chosen airline to confirm their rules and regulations.
Knitting needles and needlepoint
Crafters rejoice! Knitting needles and needlepoints are permitted in carry-on bags. Circular thread cutters or any other cutter or needlepoint tools that contain blades must be placed in checked baggage. However, you are permitted to keep scissors smaller than four inches in your carry-on baggage.
Realistic looking weapons
In the United States "realistic looking replicas” are allowed to be checked in.
Corkscrews
According to TSA corkscrews without a blade are allowed in your carry-on. However, corkscrews with a blade have to be checked in.
Bone marrow
Although restrictions may vary on different airlines, the TSA doesn't put limitations on how much bone marrow you can carry on a plane. This is the same for transplant organs.
Syringes
Unused syringes are allowed when accompanied by injectable medication. However, you must declare these items to security officers at the checkpoint for inspection. It is recommended that your medication is labelled to help facilitate the security process, but this is not a requirement. Used syringes are allowed when transported in a sharps disposal container or other similar hard-surface containers.
