埃德加·爱伦·坡（Edgar Allan Poe）（1809～1849），19世纪美国诗人、小说家和文学评论家，美国浪漫主义思潮时期的重要成员。

黄金国①

服饰优雅华丽，

一名堂堂骑士，

顶烈日骄阳穿蒙蒙夜色，

走过千里迢迢，

唱着一支歌谣，

一直在寻觅那黄金之国。

但他日渐衰老——

那名勇敢骑士——

一片阴影罩在他的心窝，

当他终于发现

没有任何地点

像是理想中的黄金之国。

当他体弱力微，

当他心力交瘁，

他遇见了一位影子香客——

他问：“影子，

到底在哪里——

是这个世界的黄金之国？”

“翻过那些山，

翻过月亮的山，

再往下走进死荫之幽谷，②

勇敢地去吧，”

那影子回答，——

“如果你寻找黄金之国！”

Eldorado

Gaily bedight,

A gallant knight,

In sunshine and in shadow,

Had journeyed long,

Singing a song,

In search of Eldorado.

But he grew old—

This knight so bold—

And o'er his heart a shadow

Fell as he found

No spot of ground

That looked like Eldorado.

And, as his strength

Failed him at length,

He met a pilgrim shadow—

'Shadow,' said he,

'Where can it be—

This land of Eldorado?'

'Over the Mountains

Of the Moon,

Down the Valley of the Shadow,

Ride, boldly ride,'

The shade replied,—

'If you seek for Eldorado!'
