Indonesia, officially the Republic of Indonesia, is an island country, with more than thirteen thousand islands in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is one of Asia Pacific’s most vibrant democracies and is emerging as a confident middle-income country. The Dutch empire conquered the regione in the 18th century and Indonesia formally proclaimed independence day on August 17 of 1945.

The Capital

The Special Capital Region of Jakarta is the capital and largest city of Indonesia. Also known as Sunda Kelapa, Jayakarta and Batavia.

Located on the northwest coast of the world's most populous island Java, it is the centre of economics, culture and politics of Indonesia. Jakarta is the 13th largest city in the world with a population of around 11.3 million people (BPS, 2010).

Other Important Cities

  • Surabaya: the second largest city, known as City of Hero in Indonesia because people of Surabaya who’s struggle in 1945, Nov 10.

  • Medan: Is the third metropolitan city in Indonesia. It's located in Sumatera island and there's a lot of tourism object in this City.

  • Makassar: Is the biggest city in East Indonesia. The most popular object in this city is the view of Losari Beach.

  • Bandung: Also called as the city of flowers. This city is the most important economic productivity in Java Island. Another thing that we can see in this city is the most beautiful architecture in building infrastructure.

Leader of the Indonesian independence movement and Indonesian’s first president (1949-1966)


Pramoedya Ananta Tour

He was an Indonesian author of novels, short stories, essays, polemics and histories of his homeland and its people. His works span the colonial period, Indonesia's struggle for independence, its occupation by Japan during the Second World War, as well as the post-colonial authoritarian regimes of Sukarno and Suharto (second president) and are infused with personal and national history.


Tontowi Ahmad

He is an Indonesian badminton player. Tontowi Ahmad rose to prominence in the world badminton in 2010 when he paired with the established mixed doubles star Lilyana Natsir. With Natsir he won the 2016 Rio Olympic gold medal in the mixed doubles category.


Lilyana Natsir

He is an Indonesian badminton player who specializes in doubles.With one gold and silver from the Olympic Games, and four gold medals at the BWF World Championships, she is regarded as one of the greatest mixed doubles players of all-time. She gained huge success by partnering with two different players. Her current partner is Tontowi Ahmad since 2011.


Agnes Monica (International Pop Singer)

Agnes Monica Muljoto known by her stage name Agnez Mo started her career in the entertainment industry at the age of six as a child singer. On the second album released in 2005, Whaddup A.. ‘?!, she collaborated with American singer Keith Martin for single “I’ll Light a Candle”.

National Flag

The Flag of Indonesia is a simple bicolour with two equal horizontal bands, red (top) and white (bottom) with an overall ratio of 2:3.[1] It was introduced and hoisted in public at the Indonesian Declaration of Independence on 17 August 1945 in Pegangsaan Timur street in Jakarta, and again when the Dutch formally transferred sovereignty on 17 August 1950. The design of the flag has remained unchanged since.

Traditional Festivals


- Yadya Kasada

also popularly known as Kesodo is a festival of Tenggerese people, who are an ethnic group of Javanese, live in Tengger mountains (Mount Bromo) in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in eastern part of Java island in Indonesia. Yadnya Kasada is held every 14th day of the Kasada Month in the traditional Hindu lunar calendar. This ceremony is held to honor Sang Hyang Widhi, God Almighty, and is based on the ancient legend of Roro Anteng and Joko Seger.


- Kaharingan

Kaharingan is a folk religion professed by many Dayaks in Kalimantan, Indonesia; The word means life, and this belief system includes a concept of a supreme deity. The main festival of Kaharingan is the Tiwah festival, which lasts for thirty days, and involves the sacrifice of many animals like buffaloes, cows, pigs and chickens, as offerings to the Supreme God.


- Ngaben

Ngaben, also known as Pitra Yadyna, Pelebon or cremation ceremony, is the Hindu funeral ritual of Bali, Indonesia.A Ngaben is performed to release the soul of a dead person so that it can enter the upper realm where it can wait for it to be reborn or become liberated from the cycles of rebirths.

Foods


- Bakso

Bakso or Baso is Indonesian meatball, made from beef surimi. The term mie bakso refer to bakso served with yellow noodles and rice vermicelli (bihun), while the term bakso kuah refer to bakso meatballs soup served without any noodles.

Bakso is popular Indonesian street food.


- Papeda

Papeda or bubur sagu, is sago congee the staple food of native people in Maluku and Papua. It is commonly found in eastern Indonesia, as the counterpart of central and western Indonesian cuisines that favour rice as their staple food.


- Rendang

Rendang is a spicy meat, especially beef dish which originated from Indonesia especially the ethnic group of Minangkabau People and is now commonly served across the country. Although culinary experts often describe rendang as a curry, rendang is usually not considered as such in Indonesia since it is richer and contains less liquid than is normal for Indonesian curries. In 2011 an online poll of 35,000 people by CNN International chose rendang as the number one dish of their "World's 50 Most Delicious Foods (Readers' Pick)" list


- Green Banana Ice (Es Pisang Ijo)

is a dessert from South Sulawesi, especially Makassar. This food main ingredient is bananas wrapped in green flour mixture. How to cook it by steaming in the cormorant. The dough is made from flour, water, and green coloring made from a mixture of water with suji or pandan leaves.

Important Sports

Indonesia also enjoys a number of more modern sports like football and badminton which is arguably their most popular. As a matter of fact, Indonesia has been taking home a lot of Olympic gold medals since the sport's introduction in the Olympic Games in 1992 except for 2012.

  • Pencak Silat - a fighting sport from Indonesia which collectively encompasses martial arts of various style

Relationship with China

The relations between imperial China and ancient Indonesia commenced during the 7th century, possibly earlier. The official foreign relations were recognized in 1950.

The National Museum of Indonesia has one of the best and the most complete collections of Chinese ceramics discovered outside of China, dated from the Han, Tang, Sung, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. 

Indonesia was part of the maritime Silk Road connecting China with India and the Arab world.

One of several Chinese whose famous in Indonesia was Zheng He, Chinese mariner, explorer, diplomat that originally born in Muslim family. He came to Indonesia for seven times and established the oldest Chinese Temple in Semarang, Central Java names Sam Poo Kong (三宝洞)

  • Home to the world’s largest lizard

    The Komodo dragon lives on just five Indonesian islands – Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang, and Padar. They are truly fearsome, weighing up to 150lbs and possessing toxic bites, allowing them to hunt and kill far bigger animals – even humans.


  •  It has 139 volcanoes

    The volcanic island of Krakatoa, between Java and Sumatra, is perhaps the most famous. It was responsible for one of the world's biggest modern eruptions; when it blew in 1883, it unleashed two huge tsunamis that killed more than 36,000 people and emitted what is considered to be the loudest sound ever heard.


  •  And a lot of people

    261.1m people call Indonesia home, making it the fourth most populous country on the planet. It is also home to the world’s biggest Muslim population (around 225m).   


  • Indonesia has the second longest coastline in the world (over 54,000km), after Canada (CIA World Factbook).


  • The Grasberg mine, located near Puncak Jaya, is the largest gold mine and the third largest copper mine in the world.

- Tanah Lot – Bali

Tanah lot temple is an ancient Hindu temple on top of an outcrop amidst constantly crashing waves. Famed for its unique offshore setting and sunset backdrops.


- Borobudur Temple

Borobudur temple in Central Java is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues.


- Mount Bromo

A scenic and popular destination sitting in a protected nature reserve, Mount Bromo, located in East Java, is known for its active volcano billowing white smoke from its crater.


- Bunaken Island

Bunaken is an island part of the Bunaken National Marine Park. Bunaken is located at the northern tip of the island of Sulawesi Indonesia. A snorkeler or diver in the vicinity of Lekuan or Fukui may spot over 33 species of butterfly fish and numerous types of groupers, damsels, wrasses and gobies.
