1. Fujian COVID outbreak can be reined in by October, experts say


The novel coronavirus outbreak in Putian, Fujian province, will likely spread to more regions across China, but can be brought under control before the National Day holiday in October with the implementation of strong control measures, health experts said on Monday.


In Putian, where the first case of the outbreak surfaced on Friday, there were a total of 58 confirmed infections and 21 asymptomatic cases as of 8 pm on Monday, the local government said.


The local government in Putian said over the weekend that the cluster of infections likely stemmed from a passenger who arrived in Fujian from Singapore on Aug 4 and was released from quarantine on Aug 26. The passenger, as well as his two children, tested positive for the virus on Friday.

2. China surpasses 1 billion fully vaccinated


More than 1 billion people have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in China, the National Health Commission said on Thursday.


China has delivered more than 2.16 billion doses of vaccines as of Wednesday, and over 1.01 billion people has been fully immunized against the virus.

more than 170 million doses had been administered to people aged 12 to 17, covering nearly 95.3 million people in this age group.


In addition, 390 million doses had been administered to people aged 60 and above, covering 200 million elderly people.


He added China has been in a leading position in terms of the number of doses given, the number of vaccinated people, as well as the vaccination coverage rate among the total population.

3. Killing of lawyer in Hubei draws condemnation


The All China Lawyers Association has strongly condemned the killing of a lawyer in Hubei province on Monday and called for the protection of lawyers.


A 47-year-old male suspect surnamed Lei was detained on suspicion of assaulting lawyer Xue Weixing at around 10 am on Monday, according to a statement issued by the public security sub-bureau of the East Lake High-Tech Development Zone in Wuhan, Hubei's provincial capital.


Xue died from his wounds after medical treatment failed, police said. A preliminary investigation found that Lei had been involved in various disputes with Xue.


The case is under further investigation, police said. No further details were given.

4. All 19 trapped in China's flooded coal mine confirmed dead


All 19 people trapped in a coal mine in Northwest China's Qinghai province flooded by mud have been found dead after a 30-day-long rescue operation, the local government said Monday.


The accident happened on Aug 14 when 21 miners were working in the mine run by Xihai Coal Development Co Ltd in Gangca county, Haibei Tibetan autonomous prefecture. Only one survived.


On the day of the accident, two miners were lifted to the ground, including one who was dead, while the rest were trapped, according to the provincial emergency management department.

5. China ranks ninth in global fatigue study


China ranked ninth on a global fatigue index list, Sleepseeker, a United Kingdom-based company, said in a study published recently.


A total of 16 countries were ranked in the study, with Singapore coming out on top with a "fatigue score" of 7.20, Focus, a German-based weekly news magazine, said on Sunday.


The second and third places went to Mexico (7.01) and Brazil (6.28), with the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia wrapping up fourth to eighth spots.


China registered a score of 4.59, placing it on the ninth spot, and the least fatigued country honor went to the Netherlands with a score of 2.01.


The study rated the most fatigued countries based on sleep hours, average annual work hours, amount of screen time and searches of sleep-related terms.

6. Shanghai airports cancel flights as Typhoon Chanthu approaches


All the passenger flights at Shanghai's two airports were canceled on Monday as Typhoon Chanthu is forecast to go through or make a landfall at the eastern coastal region of the municipality between Monday evening and night.


Shanghai first issued a warning for typhoon and rainstorm on Sunday. The city's meteorological authority said that the accumulated rainfall from Monday to Thursday is expected to be between 200 and 400 millimeters. The heaviest rainfall in an hour can reach 50 to 80 millimeters.


Chanthu, the 14th typhoon this year, was at the northern region of the East China Sea at 9 am Monday and was moving northwest at the speed of 15 to 20 km per hour. It is expected to go through Zhejiang province's Zhoushan islands at Monday noon.

7. China tightens up tourism oversight ahead of holiday


The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has tightened up management of tourism workers, and given warnings to travelers to closely follow information on new local COVID-19 outbreaks to ensure a safe trip in the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.


"To those who have travel plans in the coming Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, they should avoid places with a medium or high risk of infection and follow the destination's epidemic prevention policies in terms of checking health codes, taking body temperatures and maintaining social distance.”


"There are over 10,000 A-rated attractions opening to the public in the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, accounting for 80 percent of the nation's total number. They are required to keep the traveler capacity within a reasonable range and have a reservation mechanism before allowing travelers to enter venues."

8. Attractions to roll out discounts during Shanghai Tourism Festival


Eighty-two cultural and tourism attractions in Shanghai, including scenic spots, museums, art galleries, and cruises, will halve the price of admission tickets during the annual Shanghai Tourism Festival from Sep 17 to Oct 6, the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism announced on Wednesday.


Among those that will offer discounted tickets are National 5A-level tourist attractions such as the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum and the Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Other venues involved include the Shanghai Wild Animal Park, the Zhujiajiao ancient town, Shanghai Happy Valley, the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, Guyi Garden, Jinshanzui Fishing Village, and the Zhoupu Flower Sea scenic area.


The Shanghai Disney Resort said that it will be offering special tickets priced between 149 yuan ($23.15) and 224 yuan for entry after 3 pm during the festival period.

9. Natl Games opening shines in Xi'an

10. Convention to take Sci-fi fans to infinity and beyond


The 2021 China Science Fiction Convention will be held from Sept 28 to Oct 5 at Beijing's Shougang Industrial Park in Shijingshan district.


The annual Sci-fi extravaganza, the sixth of its kind, will present the latest in wearable technology, as well as online seminars with noted scientists, Sci-fi authors, and movie producers from around the world, organizers said in a press briefing on Tuesday.


This year's convention will also showcase books, games, toys, and a variety of cuisines to allow visitors to experience the wonders of science fiction and China's latest science and technology developments in an immersive way, said Qi Chunli, an official from Shijingshan district.


"Sci-fi has become a new calling card for Shijingshan district," he said, adding that the event will draw the attention of Sci-fi lovers around the world.
