Debt-ridden ofo entices users to add credit,

invite friends to have deposit back

The debt-ridden bike-sharing platform ofo reportedly asked users to add credit or invite more friends to use the app in order to get the deposit back without waiting in line.

"Get 2.5-yuan deposit back by adding more credit." "The more friends you invite, the quicker deposit can flow back to your account." Such advertisements have triggered widespread controversy among Chinese who had a hard time retrieving their deposit back from the ofo.

Over 16 million users are still waiting in line for the return of deposit, which ranges from 99 yuan (15.5 US dollar) to 199 yuan (31 US dollar).

 China summons Alibaba, Baidu cloud

units on fraud website access

China said on Tuesday it had summoned the cloud units of Alibaba and Baidu to better control telecom network fraud.

The two local tech giants had allowed users to access a large number of fraud websites on their cloud platforms, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in a statement on its official WeChat account, adding that it required them to correct the issues.

China has been strengthening data regulation in recent years. Together with the Cybersecurity Law, which has been in effect since 2017, its first data security law came into effect on September 1 and first law on personal data protection went into force on November 1.

Birth rate in China accounted for 0.85

percent in 2020, marking a 43-year low

China's birth rate fell below 1 percent last year, marking a new low in 43 years.

The birth rate in 2020 was recorded as 8.52 per thousand people, breaking a new low since 1978, according to the recently published China Statistical Yearbook 2020 compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics, noting that natural growth rate of the population accounts for 1.45 per thousand, also a new low in 43 years.

Demographers contributed the sharp decline to the falling number of women of childbearing age, and the impact of COVID-19.

China in May announced to further lift its family planning policy to allow each couple to have up to three children after the number of the country's newborns declined for four years straight, a major policy shift from the current second-child policy.

Six people sentenced up to 2 years for

three leopards escaping from a safari

park in East China

Six people responsible for a major accident resulting in three leopards escaping from a Hangzhou safari park, were sentenced to imprisonment ranging from 14 to 24 months respectively with suspended sentence, a Hangzhou local court in East China's Zhejiang Province announced on Friday.

Three management personnel of the park concealed the incident from the public in order to avoid any economic and reputational loss, the court revealed.

On May 7, the park admitted that the leopards had escaped, which triggered panic and criticism online over animal cruelty. On the afternoon of May 8, the second leopard was captured. The location of the third is unknown.

After the occurrence of the case, all defendants turned themselves to the police, and confessed to the crime.

Chinese internet celebrity's ashes stolen

for ghost marriage

The ashes of a Chinese internet celebrity from Central China's Hunan Province, who claimed to suffer from depression and committed suicide by drinking pesticide during a livestream, were stolen for a ghost marriage.

A ghost marriage is a folk custom in some regions in China, in which people arrange a marriage for the dead because they believe that there is an afterlife and dead people also need to get married to maintain the prosperity of their offspring. For this reason, the body remains and ashes of young women have illegally become commodities.

However, the deal failed as the buyer finally did not take the ashes.

Currently, the three offenders are under criminal detention by the local police.

China to establish negative list on

celebrity-related content which

promotes distorted values, hypes comeback

 of tainted entertainers

China’s top internet regulator said it will establish a negative list to prohibit celebrity-related content from promoting distorted values, including abnormal aesthetics, hyping of vulgar scandals, and content that induces fans to blindly idolize celebrities or hype the comeback of entertainers who have illegal and unethical records.

The notice released by Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) on Tuesday listed 15 measures in four aspects to strengthen how the online information about celebrities should be presented – content-oriented, information presentation, account management, mechanism of public opinion.

Celebrities should not induce fans to illegally fundraise or provoke confrontation among “fan cultures,” the notice says, adding that celebrities who were recently involved in unethical and illegal behaviors will be strictly prevented from reviving their careers.
