China holds national memorial ceremony

 for Nanjing Massacre victims

China's national flag flies at half mast ahead of the national memorial ceremony for the Nanjing Massacre victims at the Memorial Hall of the Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders in Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu province, Dec 13, 2021.

At exactly 10:01 am, sirens started to blare and the city came to a halt. Drivers in the downtown area stopped their cars and honked; pedestrians paused for a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims.

The Nanjing Massacre took place when Japanese troops captured the city on Dec 13, 1937. Over six weeks, they killed more than 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers in one of the most barbaric episodes of World War II.

In 2014, China's top legislature designated Dec 13 as the national memorial day for the victims of the Nanjing Massacre.

LinkedIn makes china comeback

LinkedIn announced on Tuesday that it has launched InCareer, a new jobs app designed to help professionals in the Chinese mainland find jobs and companies discover talent in China.

The United States-based company said that the launch of the app marks the first step in its new strategy for China.

LinkedIn had since mid-October started to phase out the China version of its platform, explaining that it would instead strengthen the company's focus on jobs with a new app.

The company said that it will rely on the feedback from its members and customers over the coming months to optimize the app and create a world-class user experience.

US pop star Ariana Grande criticized for

‘cultural appropriation’ but many

Chinese recognize her ‘pretty Asian make-up’

US pop star Ariana Grande was criticized by netizens for "cultural appropriation" after she appeared to look Asian in her latest photo shoot with single-edged eyelid make-up and light skin complexion, two traits of many Asian women.

As the debate heated up, Grande removed the controversial photos from Instagram but has not yet addressed the backlash.

However, many Chinese netizens seem to think differently and were more tolerant to Grande's "pretty" Asian look, regarding her behavior as enjoying the popular imitation make-ups for fun.

"She's just enjoying applying imitation make-up. Why do Westerners magnify and overanalyze the issue?" a Chinese netizen commented.

Other netizens went straight to the heart of the matter and pointed out that criticizing a nice Asian image is indeed racial discrimination.

‘Tiger dad’ who forced kids aged 5 and 7 to

study at university level in court

A woman in China has sought a restraining order against her husband whom she alleged forces their children aged five and seven to attempt secondary and university level study by beating and verbally abusing them.

The woman’s son is a primary school student while her daughter is still in kindergarten. But the woman, surnamed Zheng, said her husband, who holds a PhD degree, often teaches them secondary school and university subjects.

Tiger parenting as it is called in China involves strict parental supervision of a child’s activities and obsessive monitoring of their education and can often be excessive.

In a judgment released on WeChat on Tuesday, the People’s Intermediate Court of Nanjing, Jiangsu, eastern China, said it had issued a three-month restraining order for the woman, her seven-year-old son and five-year-old daughter and prohibited the father from threatening, beating or harassing them.

Artists, writers who commit misconduct will

not be accepted by the people, times: Xi

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called on Chinese artists and writers to boost their awareness and confidence in Chinese culture, create new prospects for Chinese literature and art, and add new luster to Chinese culture, saying that the Chinese public will not accept artists who commit misconduct.

Xi made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 11th National Congress of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and the 10th National Congress of China Writers Association.

In November, China’s top internet regulator announced it established a ban list to prevent celebrity-related content from promoting distorted values, including abnormal aesthetics, vulgar scandals, and content that induces fans to blindly idolize celebrities or hypes the comeback of entertainers who have illegal and unethical records.

Authorities urging animated offerings to draw

 on national spirit

From Ne Zha, the country's highest-grossing animated film of all time, to White Snake 2: The Tribulation of the Green Snake, which was a hit earlier this year, Chinese animators are increasingly demonstrating an interest in drawing inspiration from traditional culture in an attempt to resonate more with domestic audiences, industry insiders said.

In its recently issued 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25) for Chinese cinematic development, the China Film Administration proposed that authorities support the creation and production of animated films that highlight "the spirit of China and the aesthetic style of the East "to better meet domestic demand and enhance cultural awareness among teenagers.

'Kung fu' panda in Beijing Zoo stuns visitors

with his skills

Meng Lan, a giant panda in Beijing Zoo, went viral online for successfully breaking through the enclosure in front of the visitors.

"The giant panda walked to the fence, stepped on the decorations inside the enclosure… then held the fence with his front paws and flipped over," said a visitor who witnessed the whole scene.

At that very moment, the giant panda was captured "standing" on the top of a two-meter-high wall after scaling the fence but seemed to be unsure about where to go. His antics were filmed by people on the ground.

Fortunately, zoo workers arrived at the site very soon, helped evacuate the visitors and lured the panda back into his enclosure with food.

"He is a real kung fu panda," said a netizen.
