This study focused on the surface modification of high-performance continuous fibers, including T700 carbon fibers, PBO fibers and carbon fiber hybrid PBO fibers, by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and air dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) cold plasma, and on the interfacial property and failure mechanism of their bismaleimide composites.

We synthesized a novel poly(ionic liquid) gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) by γ-ray radiation induced polymerization of 1-alkyl-3-vinylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate and crosslinked with 1,1ꞌ-(1,6-ethylidene)-bis(3-vinylimidazolium) hexafluorophosphate in mixed carbonate esters solution containing LiPF6. The resultant GPE exhibited good mechanical properties and high ionic conductivity.

Snowman-like Janus particles were prepared via a soap-free seeded emulsion polymerization with PVDF particles as the seeds, with their potential anti-fouling property, and 4VP as the monomer with fonctional pyridine groups. These PVDF/P4VP Janus particles are promising for their potential application as smart coating or compatibilizer.

A pump-probe setup, consisting of two QCLs, was designed to engrave polymer spherulites via selective melting induced by polarized infrared resonance absorption. Results show that both pump and probe beams can reflect the structure information.

The microstructures of high-strength high-modulus carbon fibers are different from those of high-modulus carbon fibers. The smaller graphite crystallites and microvoids offer more interface and linkages among the graphite sheets in the carbon fibers, which is beneficial to dispersing the stress during the stretch of the carbon fiber, and leads to large elongation and high tensile strength for the carbon fibers.

Polystyrene (PS) microspheres were deposited on graphene fiber surface by electrophoretic deposition to form photonic crystal fibers. The color of the photonic crystal fibers varies with the variation of the size of the PS microspheres. The photonic crystal fibers, prepared using PS microspheres with diameter of 198, 233 and 287 nm, demonstrate vivid and bright blue, green and purplish red structural colors accordingly. The photonic crystal fibers do not need dyeing and their colors never fade, which meet the requirements for green and environmental protection, presenting broad prospects for their development.

Self-healing epoxy resins with multiple repair capability are synthesized successfully. The self-healing behavior is based on thermo-reversible Diels-Alder reaction, and is realized via heat-treating the as-prepared materials under 122 oC/45 min and 67 oC/36 h, respectively. In addition, the as-prepared materials have excellent reprocessing performance, which makes it possible for recycling waste epoxy resins.

PNB/PLA blend (80/20 mass ratio) showed the best shape memory effect with an average shape recovery rate of 1.2%/min, which was derived from its highest final relaxed stress, a stronger driving force for its shape recovery. This same blend also showed the highest tensile strength and elongation at beak.

The glass transition temperature and the temperature at 5% mass loss of the cured terpolymer of poly(silyleneacetylenearyleneacetylene)/ benzoxazine/cyanate ester (PPB) are 450 and 511 oC in nitrogen, respectively. The flexural and impact strength of the cured PSA blended with cyanate ester and benzoxazine increases by 115% and 104%, respectively.

Compared to SSBR/BR (75/25) tread stock, high performance PCR tire tread stock (SSBR/BR/TBIR), modified with 10 - 20 phr TBIR to substitute BR, showed outstanding physical and mechanical properties, such as 4.6 - 6.3 times higher tensile fatigue resistance, 7.3% - 10.9% higher wear resistance, 13.6% - 40.4% higher wet skid resistance with almost unchanged rolling resistance.
