Celebrating Our Achievements

1. Achieved High Scores in IELTS Test

Big applause for Yang Hao, Gao Xiaoxi and Wang Hongbo who all achieved high scores in their IELTS test! These three students have set up their own goals since they came to Canada and have continued to invest time and effort into preparing for the IELTS test under the guidance of CTC teachers.  We encourage all the students to learn from these three successful experiences and role models. As Ms. Zhang concluded, "Even just a little bit of progress every day counts! This evidently indicates that as long as there is a goal in your mind, no matter how difficult it is, put enough efforts forward and you will eventually overcome it and win the victory! No matter whether your performance in China is good or bad, as long as you work hard in Canada, you will certainly catch up and be successful!  Ladies and Gentlemen, you came to Canada withyour dreams so we must make unremitting efforts to make them come true! Let us work harder and harder!"

2. Edward Li Received Student Recognition Award

At Applewood Heights Secondary School, Principal Pearson recognizes students who go above and beyond to make Applewood a better place. Awards are given to students for high academic achievement, for excellent extra-curricular involvement and overall citizenship at the school. We are very pleased to announce that our own Edward Li received the Principal’s Award last month for his outstanding efforts at the school.  Edward’s academic achievement is exemplary, and he has become very involved in the overall life at the school. Principal Pearson recently commented, “We are very proud of Edward and feel that Applewood is a better school because he is one of our excellent students.”  Congratulations Edward – keep up the great work!

Guests Lectures

1. Peel Regional Police Presentation

Two officers from Peel Regional Police’s Diversity Division provided a special presentation to our group of international students on the topic of:

YOUNG PEOPLE & THE LAW.

This presentation dealt with topics such as:

  • Differences between Canadian & Chinese law;

  • Traffic laws in Canada;

  • The police as friends in the community;

  • Your role in creating a safer community ... and much more!

There was an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the lecture, and many students asked excellent questions to help them better understand the role of police in Canadian society.

•加拿大和中国的法律之间的差异;

•加拿大的交通法律;

•警察作为社区中的朋友;

One-to-One Report Card Chats

Based on marks and comments on mid-term report cards, Scott interviewed individual students to talk about ways they can improve their academic achievement based on suggestions from teachers. As is always the case, it is important to develop strong relationships with teachers at the school, so he and the students brainstormed ways to do this to ensure better and better achievement. They talked about creating a study schedule based on goals for achievement. They also discussed various university programs and how to achieve the dream of attending their university of choice. Every student who came to the chat had a clearer idea about how he/she can improve academic performance and develop healthy relationship with others. Time well spent for sure!

Online Interview Workshop

Students have been very busy preparing university applications and fulfilling supplementary requirements for these applications. In order to assist with this process and to make students feel more confident and at ease, Scott has conducted a series of voluntary workshops for studentswishing to prepare for the Online Interview Process. The workshop included discussions of short answers and longer, problem-solving answers. We discussed ways to ensure a positive beginning and ending to each answer and Scott provided some “tips” to students who may feel nervous or at a loss for words.  The workshop lasted 2.5 hours and students had many chances to practice questions and answers.  CTC hopes that this has helped all students who require an online interview for their university program – either this year or next. We will continue to offer these kinds of workshops based on student requests and interests.

4. Alumni Seminar

On January 1st, Shawn Pang, an outstanding graduate from last year, who now studying at the University of Western Ontario, came back to CTC with another five university students and celebrated New Year's Day with our students. These five university students are studyingat Rotman Business School in the University of Toronto, Ivey Business School inWestern Ontario, University of Waterloo or Wilfrid Laurier University. These universities and programs are well known across Canada and over the world, and are also the goals of our current students. It was an excellent opportunity for our students, the seniors introduced the application procedures of their home university, programs offered, and shared their campus life and learning strategies. Our students not only learned about the Big Picture of their further studies, but also be inspiredby them, engage them to dedicate even more efforts on their 2018’s study.

!Time for Fun!

Christmas Eve Dinner & Church Events

On the morning of December 24, by the invitation of Marcel, the retired principal of Applewood Heights Secondary School, our students came to the church for Christmas activities. Our students chatted with friends in the church, shared desserts, sang Christmas songs together, and learned Christmas legends. They spent a very meaningful morning in the church, and this helped our students have a better understanding of Canadian culture and opportunity to make connectiosn with our community. In the meantime, under the guidance of Ms. Zhang, our students helped prepare turkey dinner. Roasted turkey is an essential part of North American Christmas dinner, a symbol of family warmth. In this activities, our students improved and practiced their cooking skills. At CTC, our students not only make continuous progress in their studies but also cultivate their independent living ability. In the evening, teachers and students dined together under the Christmas tree. Steve Meng, as the host, shared Christmas stories. What a lovely Christmas Eve!

New Year's Resolutions

New Year's Resolutions is CTC's annual tradition. Summarize the achievements and experiences of the past year, write down the 2018 goal, the specific things to be done, 1 into the envelope, 1 affixed to your own room in a conspicuous place, a copy of the envelope will be saved by the teacher, next year's New Year's party by the students themselves to reopen, summed up the year's harvest. A copy of the room will remind students cherish the time every day, the rational use of time. Through this activity, from the first day of the new year, students are reminded to set their own goals for one year and to better manage themselves and schedule their time through the power of public supervision.

New Year Resolution是CTC每年的传统。

Disney on Ice & Trip to Downtown Toronto

On December 28th, a bus full of enthusiastic CTC students and guests travelled to downtown Toronto for a fun day of shopping, sightseeing and to attend the “Disney on Ice” show at the Rogers Centre. The day started with a trip to the Toronto Eaton Centre where students had a chance to see the many Christmas decorations still on display in Canada’s largest shopping mall. After making all kinds of interesting purchases, students met at the designated spot and again boarded the bus enroute to the Rogers Centre. Here, they enjoyed a two-hour skating show featuring songs and stories from many popular Disney stories. The show was full of lights and sounds and provided our international students with a view into Canadian pop culture. At the end of the show, students returned home to the dormitories where they had a delicious meal to finish off the day. What a great event during the traditional Christmas holiday here in Canada.

Scott's Visit to China

As many of you know, Scott has just returned from a trip to Weifang and Changle in support of CTC’s ongoing partnership with 271 Education Group. Scott began his China trip with 5 days at Weifang Hansen International School where he provided a workshop related to strategic planning and leadership.  During these five days, Scott had an opportunity to meet with many parents of current CTC students in order to bring greetings from Canada – both from students and from our staff.  He also spent three days in Changle where he supported the leadership team of Changle #2 Middle School who are currently organizing a “Wonderful Trip to Canada”. The trip to China was hugely successful and demonstrates the wonderful partnership we enjoy between 271 Education Group and Connect to Canada International.  In China, the days are long and the work is intense - - - but meeting with parents and doing great things for students is totally invigorating!

We are very pleased to let you know that we have a team of Canadian teachers currently working here in China for our partners at 271 Education Group. At Weifang Hansen International School, our Vice-Principal, Connie Stella, leads a team of 15 teachers who help students learn English-language skills through the student of Math and ESL. At Changle #2 Middle School, there is also a team of Canadian teachers, led by Lion and Laura who work in the International Program and prepare the next group of students to attend high school in Canada. We are very pleased and proud of our team of educators who have journeyed so far to China. They are having a hugely positive impact on our 271 partnership and many of them will continue into Year 2 in September in order to support students.
