Looking back at the past two years, the exceptional growth of the global fine wines, spirits, and cigars markets have directly driven the vigorous development of their auction markets, such momentum in the first quarter of this year has not diminished. 

2022 Madison Summer Live Auction has successfully concluded, and we are fortunate to witness the prosperity of the auction market. Actively bidding from countless global collectors and aficionados led the selling prices to skyrocket!

(Hong Kong, 21st May 2022) Madison Auction 2022 May Live Sale is coming as scheduled and ended with a great success. 316 （98%）lots of fine wines, whiskies, Moutai and cigars were sold, realizing a total sale value near HK$ 18,000,000 against an estimated HK$ 12,000,000.

Madison Auction’s first live sale of the year started at 11:00 am, May 21st in Hong Kong. Global bidders participated actively in this auction via Madison Auction APP and bidding platform (www.madison-auction.com/auctions). In addition to the Shenzhen simultaneous-casting room, Madison also partnered with PCC offered a one at the La Casa Del Habano Central at PCC for the first time to simultaneously cast and connect with Hong Kong main saleroom via live broadcast.

Even though the wine market, as observed by WMJ*, has shown a sign of weakness in the first quarter of the year, the second quarter is already halfway through, and at the end of the auction yesterday, gems from Burgundy，Bordeaux, Italy and other regions performed brilliantly.

Continue To Lead In 2022

After a relatively flat start to the year for the Burgundy Grand Cru, with its price continuously rising every month in the first quarter, Burgundy regained the throne of the strongest performer among all market segments. The indices of Burgundy and Champagne rose by 14.6% and 9.6%, respectively. According to Liv-ex (London International Vintners Exchange), the top 10 with the largest increase in the first quarter in Liv-ex 1000 are from Burgundy.

In this sale, Burgundy performed exceptionally well with no doubt with 95% sale-through rate. We were pleased to see lots of Burgundy Mixed Lot (Lot 19)，2009 Domaine Faiveley Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru（Lot 144）were hammered at 158% & 142% over the high estimate respectively.

Bordeaux also had a strong performance, as well as the lots from United States and other regions. Some of the auction prices surpassed the previous offers on the international action markets, such as Cos d'Estournel Mixed Lot（Lot 127）, 1998 Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac 1er Cru Classé（Lot 103）, 2010 Opus One (Lot 121), 2008 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia (Lot 202), etc.

The superb performances of the Burgundy and Champagne indexes have captivated almost all focus. A well-performed quarter in recent years, a 2.7% gain in the Bordeaux 500 has been overlooked. However, losing the main focus doesn't hinder its top position in the trading market, crowning with 32.8%, which is much higher than Burgundy.

Italian Blue-Chip index (IT50) of MWJ has performed well in 2021, surging 27.81%. There’s a report predicts that due to the rising prices of energy and raw materials, and the after-war impact, the production cost of Italian wine will increase significantly in 2022. However, due to the release the 2019 Tuscany films may also boost the trading performance of Italy. For example, 2019 Sassicaia has sparked immediate interest among buyers since its release in mid-February, and its market price has risen by 137% in just two months.

Beyond the spectacular lots from those regions that have been showcased ahead of our May Live Sale, partnered with Poly Auction HK again, we have gathered an impressive selection of Moutai, ranging from the 1970s to the 2010s; including Iron Caps in different formats: The Three Great Revolutions, Zodiac Series, and several Limited Editions gained a thrilling victory.

1980s Kweichow Moutai Flying Fairy (Lot 234)、1994 Kweichow Moutai Iron Cap Flying Fairy (Lot 230), stole the show in Moutai offering, both were sold above the estimate.

The May Auction was our first sale since the partnership with The Pacific Cigar Company Ltd (PCC) in 2022! These exceptional 49 lots of Cuban cigar selections also achieved excellent results, selling near HK$ 3,300,000 against an estimated around HK$ 1,500,000, includes Davidoff - 3000, Dunhill - Montecristo No.1, and Trinidad - 40th Aniversario Humidor.

The impressive provenance and rarity put a premium on the bidding results, which contributed to Lot 3011 - 2011 COHIBA COHIBA1966，Lot 3026 - 1980s DAVIDOFF 3000 & Lot 3041 - 2010 TRINIDAD 40 ANIVERSARIO TRINIDAD were all hammered nearly at 200% of the high estimates.
