今天早上，许多人早早地就到了天安门广场，迎接着2019年的第一缕阳光，共同参加庄严的升国旗仪式。大家齐唱国歌，鲜艳的五星红旗与太阳一同升起。
Thousands of people this morning gathered at Beijing's Tian'anmen Square to watch the Guard of Honor of the People's Liberation Army hold the national flag-raising ceremony on the first day of 2019.

在很多80后或90后的学生时代记忆中，如果能在每周一的升旗仪式上成为升旗手或者护旗手，是莫大的荣耀。
For those born in the 1980s or 1990s, it was a great honor to raise China's national flag at the flag-raising ceremony in front of teachers and students at school every Monday.
双语君还记得小学五年级被选为升旗手，练习了整整一周。还特地让妈妈买了新的红领巾以及白衬衫。那天早晨五点多就兴奋地睡不着了……

刚开始的国旗护卫队的人员是36名，是为了纪念1949年新中国的成立，36人成为4排，一排9人合起来就代表着1949的意思。
Many years ago, the Guard of Honor had 36 members in total, as a way to commemorate the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 — 36 people were divided into four rows, with nine people in each row, representing the meaning of 1949.
从金水桥头到国旗杆下是103.5米，正步是138步，所以升国旗的小哥哥每一步都必须是75厘米
The distance between Jinshui Bridge in Tian'anmen Square to the flagpole is 103.5 meters, which is equivalent to 138 goose steps — that means every step the guards take must be exactly 75 centimeters.
国旗的高度是28.3米其实也是有特殊的意义的。中国从1921年7月21日建党到1949年10月1日建国，这个时间刚好就是28年三个月。
The height of the flagpole, 28.3 meters, has a special meaning. The period from the founding of the Party on July 21, 1921 to the founding of the People's Republic of China on Oct 1, 1949 was exactly 28 years and three months.
还有一个数字，那就是旗基座四周是用56个黄色铜墩连成的护栏，象征56个民族手拉手心连心，团结在国旗下。
The base of the national flag is surrounded by a guardrail made up of 56 copper piers, symbolizing China's 56 ethnic groups united under the national flag.
现在很多地方的升国旗仪式中已经改为全自动按钮升国旗，但是拉绳子升国旗的方式依旧留存在很多人的记忆中。
Now the raising the national flag in many places across China is carried out by automatic button, but pulling the rope to raise the flag still remains a memory for many.
