Cherry blossoms in the spring, fireworks in the summer, maple in the fall, hot springs in the winter — these are the reasons to travel to Japan all year round. If you don't like the hustle and bustle, then Japan's Shoryudo is a good choice. It is not necessary to go to Kyoto and Nara to taste the original Japanese culture.

Shoryudo means“rising dragon route” in Japanese. It is a tourist area consisting of nine counties in Japan’s Chubu (central) and Hokuriku region. The shape of the Noto Peninsula in the north of the area is like a dragon head, while the Mie Prefecture in the south takes the shape of a dragon tail. From the south to the north, the region looks like a dragon, so the area is known as the rising dragon route.

Here, you can find Japan's most beautiful nature, with colors changing throughout the year, as well as idyllic sceneries, such as traditional Japanese-style houses, castles and world heritages. A long history of traditional culture has bred a fertile soil for the local cuisine. Come to Shoryudo and enjoy this wonderful trip to Japanese culture.

Shoryudo boasts convenient transport, and one of the most popular route is the three-day trip from Nagoya to Kanazawa, Shirakawago, and Takayama to the north. You can also arrange your own unique journey according to your own preferences. This is also part of the charm of Shoryudo.

The first stop is Nagoya. Nagoya is the fourth-largest city in Japan. It is in the western part of Aichi Prefecture. It is also known as the “central capital”, because of its location between Tokyo and Kyoto. There are more than a dozen skyscrapers around Nagoya Station, and numerous underground department stores are connected to form a huge shopping center that will exhaust both your palate and wallet.

The most famous attraction is Nagoya Castle. Located in the city center, it is best known for its golden animal head tiles on the ridge of the castle tower. In 1612, the Edo Shogun (hereditary military dictator of Japan) general Tokugawa Leyasu built Nagoya Castle. Until the fall of the shogun in 1867, it was the home of the Okubo Tokugawa family, one of the three major families of Tokugawa. The castle was attacked by air raids in 1945, and most of the architecture was burnt down. In 1959, the castle tower was rebuilt and it was changed to a seven-story reinforced concrete building. Since then, the castle tower has been a symbol of Nagoya.

After 4 hours’ bus ride, we arrived in Kanazawa. Kanazawa is the economic and cultural hub of the Hokuriku region. Since the establishment of the city by the military commander Maeda Toshiie in the late 16th century, it has continued to prosper for nearly 400 years. In the center of the city, there is Kenroku-en, the garden is one of the three best landscape gardens in Japan, and it is famous for its "winter snow slings". This is a kind of rope that clings to the tree like an umbrella and protects trees from the snow.

Kanazawa is also famous for its 70 temples in Tera-machi street, and the Owara-machi is replete with hundred-year-old shops. These places make visitors feel the precipitation of history. There are also many shops in the city selling local traditional handicrafts, including Kagayuzen, a dyed fabric designated as an important intangible cultural heritage, and Kutaniyaki ceramics, which is characterized by rough painting style and vivid colors, as well as gold foil handicrafts.

Two hours’ ride south, you arrive at Shirakawago, known as the most beautiful countryside in Japan. Shirakawago is the epitome of Japanese pastoral scenery and rural flavors. The village retains a few traditional Japanese farmhouses with roofs that look like folded palms, which are rare in other parts of Japan. Shirakawago is a quiet mountain village surrounded by mountains, paddy fields and rivers. More than 110 residential buildings have been contiguous and were designated as a UNESCO's World Heritage Site in 1995.

You cannot miss the staple gastronomy in Shoryudo – hida beef. Leaving Shirakawago, you can reach Takayama in two hours, and the town also enjoys the reputation as the little Kyoto. A representative food in the central part of Japan, only black hair cattle that have been fattened for a certain period of time are eligible to be rated as the hida beef. The fat is evenly distributed, the texture is beautiful like marble, and the color, fragrance and taste have reached top level compared with other famous Japanese beef like Kobei and wagyu. There are a couple of cuisine choices for the beef: sukiyaki, barbecue, sashimi and beef sushi.
