Nova Scotia’s lobster industry has taken a tentative step aimed at reopening its crucial export market in China. The market for the province’s lobster had dried up over the last month as China dealt with the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

Premier Stephen McNeil says a flight with 67 tons of live lobster left for China on Saturday. He says it’s a sign the market may be starting to loosen up, and it’s positive news for rural parts of the province. Fisheries Minister Keith Colwell says the initial flight is considered a test to determine how the distribution system in China fares with moving lobster products.

China had been the No. 1 market for air freight shipments of live lobster from Nova Scotia. “They are our biggest buyers of lobster,” said Colwell. “That’s not going to change. The people in China have to get back to normal life again and once that happens, we’ll be back in business.” The province sent $525 million in seafood exports to China in 2018 — the bulk of which was lobster.

Despite the recent novel coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns that have arisen in China lately, Malaysia remains optimistic that demand for its durian will not be threatened, so much so that it is targeting over 60% in growth this year.

"We are popular for Musang King durian that we export to China. [At present] the time of the coronavirus outbreak is not the Musang King season so for now it has not caused any effect [on export to China]."

Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority Chairman Ishak Ismail said at a launch event earlier this month. "I'm confident and believe the demand for Musang King is extraordinary [even with the virus outbreak] and the price there is very attractive.”

Key USA ports laden with frozen chickens are Mobile, Alabama; Savannah, Georgia; New Orleans, Louisiana and rail lines going into Oakland, then off rails to container ships bound for China and North Asia chicken markets.

Visit Limlurcha, vice-chairman of the Thai National Shippers' Council and president of the Thai Food Processors Association, said that if the coronavirus epidemic can be kept under control in the first quarter, China's demand for imported food from Thailand is expected to double in the second quarter.
泰国国家船运委员会副主席兼泰国食品加工协会会长利姆鲁查表示，如果能够在第一季度控制住新冠肺炎疫情的流行，预计中国对泰国进口食品的需求将在第二季度翻一番。
Thailand is one of the world's leading food exporters, with rice making up the largest share at about 17.5%, followed by chicken, sugar, processed tuna, tapioca flour and shrimp. The biggest food export market is Japan, followed by China, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
