The online community "Traceless Life" created by Su Yige has gathered 34,000 net users in the last two years, who would share tips or promote ideas on how to live sustainably.
She has been eating very little processed food, making homemade plastic wraps, bringing her own cups and utensils when eating out, and has an organic compost "farm" of 300 earthworms to digest organic waste.
Su's family from the small and clean coastal city Weihai in East China's Shandong province, has always been frugal.
Su buys only secondhand products, all year round. In her view, sustainability is about planning to cope with the planet’s limited resources.
The 24-year-old has adopted an eco-minimalist lifestyle for years. Since 2020, she has been sharing her ideas and tips online, which have received much positive feedback, with other people joining the sustainable living team.
Su Yige buried her broken phone case into the earth to observe if it could really be organically decomposed as advertised. The phone case, like many other things she owns and uses in her life, is what she hopes to leave little trace on the Earth, such as her bamboo toothbrush, clothing bag, or homemade washing powder.
"Moreover, it can help me save money, live healthier, and gain a better understanding of nature. So that is how I live, how I am happy about my lifestyle."
"Environmental protection should be people-centered, instead of living as a slave to materials."
Optimistic, responsible and concerned about the planet and the environment. These are common personality traits of today’s Gen Z consumer in China, new research by Vogue Business shows.
A survey of nearly 1,000 consumers aged from 18 to 24 in China, shows just over half (54 per cent) consider themselves to have a relatively clear and accurate level of knowledge about the concept of “sustainability”.
Just over a quarter (27 per cent) of Gen Z consumers in China say they are actively taking steps to reduce their impact on the environment through reducing their individual carbon footprint, recycling and consuming less. This is the category we’ve called sustainable doers. Many have returned from studying abroad, where they were influenced by the popularisation of sustainable issues in foreign countries and universities.
