二十年资深译员观点|别把翻译叫做“爱好”

有时候，我觉得翻译这个行业很有趣。
有些人战战兢兢天天在纠结我没英专学历没CATTI2证书没花钱报几个培训班到底能不能做翻译，总之死活不敢投出第一份简历，做一份试译评估自己的水平。
我已经不记得到底有多少人问我，我只有四六级可不可以做翻译，我不是英语专业的可不可以做翻译，真的快被这种没营养的问题问疯了……
提问之前先做好功课行吗……
而另一方面呢，有些人又似乎太看不起翻译，自信过了头，就凭一句我是翻译爱好者,会用搜狗有道机翻就敢出来找兼职了，交出来的译文惨不忍睹心里也没点数。
我一直都在以自己的翻译从业经验跟大家证明，没证书没专业没相关经历没关系，不妨碍你成为翻译。
但是，你缺了上述东西，就得拿别的补足。
你不做大量练习，不反复斟酌译文，不复习译审稿，想靠机翻修修改改蒙混过关是不是太过分了点？梁静茹给你的勇气吗？
总之，翻译没某些人想象没那么难，当然也没那么简单。
我之前跟大家聊起过领英是结交各国译员职业人脉、掌握行业各方观点和动态的好地方。
看得多了，我也发现，其实国内翻译行业存在的问题，国外也同样存在。
针对某些人把翻译看得太儿戏太轻盈的现象，国外译员已经撰文给予了反驳（我就不用废话了哈哈哈~）。
其中之一就是Laura Cattaneo。
这是一位精通意大利语、法语、英语和西班牙的资深译员，她以二十载从业经验，直截了当地道出了关键所在：“Translation is not a Hobby”but “a profession”

I sometimes hear or read of translation and translators talked about in elegiac tones or through stereotypes you might find in fortune cookies. A romantic aura or image, which is quite far from reality and also risks to harm their - our - reputation.
Translation is, first and foremost, a profession.
A translator has nothing to envy to physicians, lawyers or other such professionals.
Not in terms of the long studies and ongoing training you need to succeed and stay afloat in today’s competitive market.
Not in terms of the strict procedural standards and confidentialityyou need to abide by if you want to be part of the sectors’ professional bodies and be taken seriously by your peers and clients.
Not in terms of entrepreneurial spirit and networking abilities, needed to make your business prosper. Nor in terms of being able to work to the highest standards, asking for the right price for your work.
So, isn't translation an art as well? In part it is. Insofar as by art we mean talent, and being aware of how hard cultivating talent really is.
I believe even technical translation requires creativity, just like writing does.
After all, Marguerite Yourcenar said, rather authoritatively, “Translation is writing.”
