FM CCNU | Online Thesis Defense

Online thesis defense has been arranged to ensure that students can successfully complete their graduation thesis while the outbreak is being dealt with. Although it’s an “online defense”, the process is still standardized and rigorous. 

To ensure the standard and quality of online defense, students and teachers made mutual efforts. Let’s see what our teachers and students feel about the online thesis defense. 

Professor Shilei Fan said: “Online thesis defense is more convenient for students. They get less nervous when going over their power point on their own computer.”

As for the students: 

“Thesis defense is the last important test and challenge during my four-year college life and it’s very important to make full preparations. In order to achieve fluency and clear logic, I spent much time going over the process.”

“What impressed me most was the part when professors raised their questions. All the professors upheld rigorous attitudes, listened to my report carefully, raised specific questions and helped us improve our papers with patient guidance, which not only helped me enhance the quality of my thesis, but also let me have a deeper understanding of education and scientific research.”

Joey: Welcome! What do you think are the differences between online and offline thesis defense?

Yang: Apparently, we don’t have to be as nervous as we are in an offline defense because we don’t have to face our teachers and professors directly. Sometimes we can get help from our notes.

Joey: What do you think is the significance of thesis defense?

Yang: The thesis defense is an important matter that has an impact on our graduation. Enough emphasis should be paid on it. All our mentors have put a lot of efforts into guiding our thesis and our teachers and professors are serious enough when they hold the defense so we need to be serious about the defense as well.

Joey: What do you think of this new form of online thesis defense?

Yang: Thanks to the great invention of internet, we can exchange our views with our teachers and classmates from thousands of miles away. The process of online defense is similar to that of the offline one. But for me, the online defense is not as formal as the offline one because we don’t have to dress up or go to certain places. I just sat by my desk and I graduated in a hurry.  

Joey: Do you have any advice or tip for us when we have a video conference or online interview in the future?

Yang: First, turn on the visual background if the room is in a mess. Many online meeting apps have this function which is pretty useful. Second, turn on the beauty mode if look pale. Third, do make sure that your room has enough light. Don’t make yourself look dark. Try to show the best image of yourself and you can have a better result. Hope you find them useful when you need to prepare for an online defense or an online interview in the future.

During the epidemic period, online thesis defense is not only an epitome of the graduation work of 2020, but also an important manifestation of teachers and students uniting and overcoming all the possible difficulties and challenges together.
